People pretend like ‘48 was just spontaneous. besides the fact that Jews have consistently been there since the destruction of our home so long ago, there is a story of a people consistently fighting back whatever way to get back home. Empires of the world prohibited sovereignty
Attempts to reestablish our home were stifled by economic wall that is the cost of rebuilding a home . also prohibiting many attempts, collective trauma from being constantly made to be the “stranger” in all other lands and violence.
The moment the British and ottoman let off in the region, we finally a moment.
I am sephardi myself, and while I don’t live in Israel now, after inquisition over 520 years ago many of us went to Israel. Our leaders were trying to get more people to come back, but tbh it was harder financially than living in Turkey for instance.
Jews in Israel at that time required more financial support from the diaspora. The Diaspora and Israel have always been connected.
I can trace back my history partly due to Inquisition records partly due to fervency of my family to maintain records, those of us who have been in Israel can trace far back.
If you will notice a theme of this thread is that economy and empires have played a major role, the emphasis in Diaspora seems to be more on I/P conflict but in Israel economic issues are one of the top concerns
There have been massive protests in Israel during COVID because a lot of this. All I am saying is we should also be paying attention to this.
