Why the Golden Dawn verdict is important, but not enough. 1/ They were an outlier in European fascism, trying to combine the legal, parliamentary party with squadrismo (and major organised crime). The right-wing coalition government tolerated them; they infiltrated the cops...
2/ Today a member was found guilty of premeditated murder of Pavlos Fyssas; numerous members of consipiracy to murder; and the entire organisation as a criminal organisation... that's the decisive bit. It should now be legally dismantled and the leaders jailed...
3/ But Greek fascism has roots going back to collaborationism in the War, and to the Civil War, and strong Balkan, Russian and international ties... suppressed polls at the highpoint put GD's support at 18%
4/ And the right-o-sphere in Greece includes a layer cake of racist and nationalist parties. To defeat fascism, liberalism, conservatism and the judiciary have to make a choice: either to collude or suppress. The NSDAP shows there's no third route...
5/ If, at the Storm-33 trial, or Potempa murder trial, the German state had prosecuted the SA as a criminal organisation, as the Greeks did with Golden Dawn, Hitler's entire strategy would have been disrupted, even despite the late stage...
6/ Unwittingly the Greek judiciary have laid down a challenge to the rest of Europe and the G7, above all the USA: will you tolerate and collude with violent criminality or will you suppress it?
7/ When I interviewed Panagiotaros, I asked: why do you stick to violence when you could morph into a right wing populism like UKIP or FN? The answer clearly was that they had a philosophy of violence - that's a defining feature of fascism...
8/ Most fascist projects, in Britain, the USA, Spain etc, rigorously erect deniability between the violent wing and the parliamentary wing. But those barriers are breaking - in Spain and Portugal, and spectacularly in the USA....
9/9 Most European constitutions can deal, with willpower, with a Golden Dawn-type fascism - but the US Constitution could not, as evidenced by the numerous pardons, mistrials and acquittals of militias, and the current loss of state monopoly of armed force.
