Clocks are changing in the northern hemisphere soon, so here's my advice, as someone who finds winters hard: if you're spending most of your time at home, think seriously about whether you can just keep daylight saving going through winter. Local time! A timezone just for you.
Here is a slogan for this proposal: YOU TELL THE TIME. THE TIME DOES NOT TELL YOU.

Here is another: SAY NO TO BIG CLOCK.

Here is a third, more unwieldy, slogan: WHAT TIME IS IT? IDK, TIME IS MADE UP ANYWAY, WHAT TIME DO YOU WANT IT TO BE?

Here is a FAQ:
SURELY THIS DOESN'T WORK

Not for everyone! Early risers will hate it; everyone in your house needs to be on board; it's easier if you work from home and/or do one task all day, harder if you have loads of tasks at diff times.

But if it does work for you it's a tiny miracle.
SO YOU'VE TRIED IT?

Yes, the last two winters. It's great!

WHAT

You have to commit. Every computer, every phone, every clock: set 'em an hour ahead. We had one clock that reset itself automatically and eventually we just put it in a drawer and taped the drawer shut.
WHY

* With Local Time, it gets dark at eg 5 instead of 4
* Effortless early rising: 8:30am for you is 7:30 for everyone else
* Your lunchtime and dinner come early, making outdoor spaces, shops and cafes (if you're somewhere they're okay to go to) less stressful and crowded.
ISN'T IT SUPER CONFUSING?

At first! But you get used to it within a week or so.

DON'T YOU JUST COMPENSATE AND DO EVERYTHING AN HOUR LATER?

Weirdly, no.

IF EVERYONE DID IT, WOULDN'T YOU LOSE SOME OF THE BENEFITS?

I absolutely promise you: everyone is not going to do this.
OKAY, WAIT, HANG ON, IF THIS WORKS WHY NOT GO TWO HOURS AHEAD

Double daylight saving! Love it, but if you work out of the house or have meetings or spend time with local friends (even online), I think it'd stretch things too far. Try it though! Let me know how it goes!
HEY YEAH, WHAT ABOUT SEEING FRIENDS? WHAT ABOUT MEETINGS?

It's fine, you just remember your friends and colleagues are in a different timezone to you, like skyping with Berlin. And if you forget - well, the worst that happens is you're an hour early.
The biggest risk is that your friends will think you're a dick if you explain it to them, but look, if you're seriously thinking about trying this out then probably you've already selected your friends partly for their ability to put up with you.
I FEEL LIKE THIS IS THE SAME THING AS DECIDING TO GO TO BED EARLIER AND GET UP EARLIER

I mean, in a way: yes. In another way: no, because unlike deciding to go to bed and get up earlier, (1) this actually works, and (2) you never look out the window at encroaching dark at 4pm.
Q. I HATE IT
