Female athletes get the short end of the stick.
When it comes down to pay, media coverage, and rules to adhere by, #womeninsports must fight harder than men for equality, yet they are still reduced to “less than”.
Male athletes receive more media coverage than their female counterparts.
Male athletes earn, on average, 94% more than female athletes. ( https://online.adelphi.edu/articles/male-female-sports-salary/)
Female athletes often have their sex and sexual preference judged based on their performance and appearance.
Women’s sports should be equally prioritized with men’s sports and this thread will give reasons why.
Women's participation in sports is only 8% less than that of men. Yet, women are only awarded equal prize money as men 83% of the time. Why? https://movethelimit.com/women-in-sport-statistics-2020/
Most media outlets blame the unequal pay on the revenue women's games bring in.
However, some women's sports, such as U.S. Women's Soccer have passed men's sports in viewership.
"...approximately 14.3 million U.S. viewers tuned in to the final match on television, compared to 11.4 million for the 2018 Men’s World Cup Final, a 22% U.S. viewership boost." https://www.cnbc.com/2019/07/10/us-viewership-of-the-womens-world-cup-final-was-higher-than-the-mens.html
"According to numbers obtained by the Wall Street Journal, in the period between 2016 and 2018, the USWNT out-drew the men’s team in ticket sales, bringing in $50.8 million to the men’s $49.9 million." https://www.thelily.com/we-broke-down-4-common-arguments-about-equal-pay-in-womens-pro-sports/
What makes that data even more impressive is that the USWNT ticket prices are set lower than for the tickets to see the men play.
According to Forbes, the WNBA generates about $25 million annually from its television deal with ESPN. The NBA generates 100 times that. https://www.forbes.com/sites/oliviaabrams/2019/06/23/why-female-athletes-earn-less-than-men-across-most-sports/#34229f7440fb
Here is an example of less views, less revenue. However, the distribution of revenue to the players is substantially different.
So, many articles like to blame women athlete's pay on lower viewership and less revenue. BUT what happens when these athletes do get in front of the camera?
A typical after-game interview with a professional male athlete goes something like this:
Notice all questions are aimed at the game. There are no questions about Rob Gronkowski's outfit.
Then we have this:
Then we have this:
What would viewers think if men were asked the same type of questions? Well, someone decided to make a video doing just that.
The video is humorous. And why is that? Because the questions are ridiculous. They do not reflect the athletes ability or performance in the game. Yet, women deal with those sort of questions regularly.
Women have shown that they can play sports and make it just as entertaining as men playing, I stated in earlier in this thread.
