I tweeted this earlier this afternoon. And I meant it. Then, I went to football workouts (we got the okay to start today). Masked up the whole time. Bodyweight only. Pods & social distanced outside. But it was so damn good to be with those kids. https://twitter.com/jerodbrown_/status/1313566881773543424
Teaching, for me, is a reciprocal career. Yes, it’s important to me that I make an impact on students. I want them to learn to love language & appreciate other cultures. But I also get something from them also. Distance Learning has removed that reciprocal relationship for us all
When I’m in my classroom with students, I am sustained by the connections I make with them. Teaching is hard every year. But there are moments in a classroom or on a field that simply can’t be replicated. I love those moments. It is what drives me as a professional.
Distance Learning+lack of sports has removed those moments. So it’s hard to persevere. But seeing those kids today did wonders for my mental & emotional health. I’m hoping, for all of our sake, that we can find a safe/healthy way to be together at some point this year.
Our program is full of some phenomenal young men & one extraordinary young lady. I’m thankful to get to create relationships with them that hopefully enrich their lives as much as they enrich mine.
