"So WTF is even happening?": A thread on understanding Lovecraft Country

Because I do not like typing too much on Twitter, i will make this as simplified as possible
So let's start simple with HP Lovecraft.

Lovecraft was novelist mostly known today for creating his own genre of horror often called cosmic or "Lovecraftian" horror

It had 2 main unique aspects: the decentralization of man's place in the universe and the horror of the unknown
Cosmic horror makes the audience feel small. It picks at that feeling in the back of your mind that ultimately you are a speck in the universe and nothing matters

In most horror, there's a monster or creature in an otherwise safe world.
In cosmic, the world itself is unsafe
When you think about it, isn't that concept a little familiar to us as a people? The idea that the place in which we dwell is inherently hostile to us?

Real quick, whats the name of the show again?
"OK, so I get the name. But why is it so weird?"
AHT AHT AHT

IS it weird? Are you sure?

Whats weird? The magic? The monsters? The sci fi?

But you've seen them in other movies and TV, yes?
The 1st conversation in the show is its entire thesis. Tic and an older woman have a convo about a book he's reading. Tic explains his love of pulp stories and how he gets what he can out of them.

He also mentions how a negro boy from Chicago couldnt go on go on those adventures
And THATS the point!

So far we have:
Escaped monsters in the woods
Been on a tomb raid/treasure hunt
Fought ghosts
Been to space
Gone against Wizards

And much more!
Theres a heavy influence from adventure serials and old pulp stories here. Except this time they have black people in it. And instead of plugging black people in and calling it a day, the show decided to juxtapose untold parts of the black experience next to these stories.
This combination is unique, creating a viewing experience likely never seen before. But "weird" shouldn't be the descriptor here.
I urge you guys to reframe that reaction. Because once more, what makes it weird?

The wizards? The ghosts?

Is it weird in Harry Potter?
Or Game of Thrones?
Or Vampire Diaries?
Or Teen Wolf?
True Blood?
American Horror Story?
Buffy?

There are so many.. but when its blac.. nvm
I don't think there is very much you guys don't "understand". What it really seems like is a need for perspective

This show has a lot going on thematically and there is a lot to unpack. Hopefully the lil info i provided gave enough context for harder to get things, but
the rest just requires a more open mind. Enjoy the ride, you're on an adventure. Take it as it comes. Don't try soooo hard to understand it. You likely already do (At the very least mostly).

Its certainly deeper than those other shows i mentioned. But its not a cerebral puzzle
In conclusion, this show is quite beautiful to me and I want you guys to see that too

My analysis has barely scratched the surface (there is SO MUCH MORE I have to say), and I will certainly be forcing my friends to listen to a whole PowerPoint presentation about it
The idea of this thread was to give a better general understanding of the the show so you can enjoy better when watching

But if yall wanna ask about anything specific, or anything I said. I'll be more than happy to answer
I have a lot to say about this bitch
And how fine Ruby is
