the beths - a thread
info -
indie pop/rock/alternative band, the beths, consists currently of lead singer elizabeth stokes, guitarist jonathan pierce, and bassist banjamin sinclair. elizabeth and jonathan met in hs and met sinclair and ivan luketina-johnston (former member) at university of aukland.
the band from aukland, nz originally formed in 2k15, producing their first song “idea/intent” in july. “great no one” (one of my faves) was debuted in may of 2016, one that was to be added to one of their debut albums, “future me hates me”. it was nominated one of the #5 for ...
the 2k18 silver scroll in nz. in 2k18, luketina-johnston left the band. in 2k19, the band started their first tour supporting death cab for cutie. their album “jump rope gazers” (SO GOOD) was released in 2k20 in july. they are known for using vocals from all four members, ...
... but mainly stokes. other former members no longer belonging to the band consist of: tristan deck (drums and vocals), katie everingham (drums and vocals), chris pearce (bass and vocals), and adam tobeck (drums and vocals).
my top rated songs
1. i’m not getting excited - i love the guitar in this song and the vocals with an unusual sound to the chorus vs. verse “i finally earned my place in the urn”, “and so i don’t enthuse, keep my grip on joy loose”.
2. happy unhappy - such a cute yet bittersweet song of someone who settled in life but found happiness in a certain someone. “i was fine on my own, tolling steady like a dial tone, couldn’t you leave me, i was happy unhappy”.
3. little death - for those who are undeniably tongue-tied by someone who has a total grip on them. this song talks about dying slightly whenever seeing that person. “there’s no sign of the sun, so the moon moves out in front, she wants to be aligned, we all want to be aligned”.
great no one - from what i take from this song, i hear words from a broken person trying to understand their life and depression, “always caught in between” themselves and something else, perhaps “losing the appetite” because of their sadness/eating disorder. “misery loves me”.
5. idea/intent - i see this song as a way of someone saying, “i have so many dark thoughts, but i won’t day them unless you want me to hurt you”. ex: “it’s the idea, that’ll cut you up and cut you down”, “it’s the intent, that’ll fuck you up now, it’ll fuck you up again & again”
6. rush hour 3 - a simply lain yet very complex song, speaker talks of their want for companionship and for someone to come over and watch a movie, without it being “too serious”, yet still wanting love. “i wanna take you home, maybe watch a movie: i just downloaded rush hour 3”.
