WOW. It isn't just in the U.S. where negative opinions of China have soared. It's all across the developed world.

The % of people with no confidence in Xi Jinping is now over 70% in every country surveyed.

Japan (84%) and South Korea (83%) are the most negative on Xi.
Here's a longer-term picture.

Almost every country surveyed seems to have become more unfavorable towards China around 2012, when Xi took power. And then there was another big jump in unfavorability this year.
Most countries surveyed now see China as the world's dominant economic power, rather than the U.S.
In every country surveyed, very few people trust Xi Jinping to do the right thing in global affairs.
And these intensely negative evaluations of Xi have been increasing for several years, long before COVID appeared.
By the way, Pew DID do a poll of developing countries in December 2019.

Opinions of China were pretty positive in the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America, but pretty negative in developing Asia. Opinions of Xi were generally negative.

Also, it's worth noting that while the U.S. is still viewed more favorably than China among developed countries, its numbers are deteriorating.

Trump is even more disliked than Xi, and most believe the U.S. handled COVID-19 worse than China did.
