Kpop History lesson: Everything that modern kpop boy groups are essentially traces back to two groups: TVXQ and Big Bang. Let's talk about that (thread)
modern kpop's roots began with the first gen; but most of what we associate with it now started in the second gen and that gen essentially began in 2004 with TVXQ's debut. (2)
If you want to get pedantic, just about everything we associate with modern kpop boy groups either began with TVXQ or was a reaction to them (3)
Big Bang themselves were a reaction, for example. (4)
However Big Bang has a far bigger impact than them (but we'll get to that, I promise), but that doesn't minimize their impact. (5)
TVXQ is the reason boy groups were able to expand their reach into Japan (and it was becuase they thrived there that saved the group post the lawsuit) and across Asia. They opened those doors for others (6)
The JYJ lawsuit also had an impact by changing the laws to allow idols that came after them to have fairer contracts. We may all curse the seven year curse, but imagine idols stuck in 13 year contracts (7)
Thank Jaejoong and Junsu for sacrificing their careers to ensure a better future for others, y'all. (8)
While TVXQ's impact is more behind the scenes and felt within their own company, there is no mistaking the impact Big Bang would have on the industry (9)
Lightsticks, mini albums, world tours, high fashion house deals, Rap based groups, idols making their own music...all of these things came because Big Bang pioneered them. (10)
We literally wouldn't have groups like Stray Kids, BAP and BT$ without Big Bang proving that the concept worked. (11)
Big Bang build YG in a way we wouldn't see again until bT$ essentially built BH not even a full decade later. (12)
Every K-pop group that's debuted in BB's wake has a rapper (which isn't always a good thing) because of G-Dragon and TOP making that kind of thing popular (13)
(side note: there are only about four good rap lines in kpop as far as I'm concerned/ GD & TOP, Bang Yongguk and Zelo from BAP, IM and Joohoney from Monsta X and Bt$ rap line of RM, Suga and J-Hope) (14)
Also idols going solo? Thank GD, who did it first. He provided that idols can go independent from their groups and be successful. In fact I found Big Bang because he released Heartbreaker (15)
One of the more frustrating things about the loss of LivejJournal is that you loose a lot of K-pop history in the international space and when you lose that history, you end up with new fans thinking their faves are the only ones who matter (16)
Every new kpop group stands on the shoulders of those who came before them and opened doors (16)
Modern Kpop bgs owes a lot to tvxq and big bang, the two keystone groups of the modern gen. I wish more people would respect that (end thread)
