let’s talk a bit about Genshin Impact and how it’s a Mainland Chinese developer and how naturally they don’t have a choice but to censor words like Hong Kong, Taiwan, or even VTuber Kiryu Coco. How can we fight CCP censorship without hurting small companies that have no choice?
Mainland Chinese companies naturally have to comply with CCP rules and regulations. If they dared allow anything Beijing doesn’t like, even overseas, the chances of punishment or even arrest would be likely. Beijing does NOT play here
Some people have decided not to play Genshin Impact in response to this knowledge. That’s your choice, but frankly imo that won’t actually discourage Beijing from forcing small companies to continue to censor in overseas releases. Too many people will keep playing
It’s a free game, which is a huge plus for many people especially during COVID when people’s finances aren’t so hot, and lbr... not enough people genuinely care to hit Beijing where it hurts: companies like Disney or NBA where you pay $$$ to them and they keep censoring
We have to remember that companies based in Mainland China don’t have a choice, and citizens of Mainland China don’t have a choice either. But companies like the NBA and Disney AREN’T based in the PRC. They DO have a choice, and they are Deliberately Choosing to censor for $$$$
So what do we do?

Imo instead of focusing on companies who have zero say in the matter (PRC based companies don’t exactly have free speech) we take the fight to companies like Sony. Demand that this censorship on overseas servers NOT based in the PRC is halted immediately
Start demanding that if the chat/conversation isn’t happening on a Chinese server, these words shouldn’t be censored. Make it a regulation. Eventually, Beijing will realize they can no longer play this game where they can censor outside of their own country if they don’t want
to lose money.

This fight then needs to be taken to universities, to big corporations like Disney, and boycotts need to happen until ALL companies REFUSE to censor on Beijing’s behalf. Hell, I dare to suggest we make it illegal to censor on Beijing’s behalf if you’re not in PRC
We need to hit Beijing in the wallet to stop this censorship, which is just another (alarming) form of soft power. We need to tell ALL companies that no, they should NOT censor on Beijing’s behalf, that these censors should exist only on PRC-based servers and nowhere else
If you don’t want to support a Mainland Chinese company that has no choice but to censor these words, that’s fine. But I genuinely believe that will change nothing and we need to start actively complaining to companies like Sony to stop censoring on Beijing’s behalf overseas
Refusing to play Genshin Impact, a free game that doesn’t impact Beijing’s wallet enough like Disney or the NBA, does not solve the issue at hand. It’s time to get loud and get vocal and demand all companies everywhere to stop CCP censorship outside of China
If we don’t get loud and vocal, this will continue. It will affect literally everything and it is starting to. If you don’t want this to be your reality then start demanding that CCP censorship stop outside of China. We can’t ask a Chinese-based company to break their own laws
but we can certainly ask overseas companies that host the game to refuse to censor on Beijing’s behalf. If this means that Chinese companies are forced to pull So Many Games and other media out of foreign markets? Beijing may think twice
The ultimate goal should be a realistic one. It would be AMAZING if the CCP allowed freedom of speech within China. That would be a dream come true. I would also like a million dollars lol but that’s only slightly less realistic. But I think asking for CCP censorship to stay in
China and only exist on servers based in China seems reasonable to me.

Anyway, thanks for reading and remember to please consider going straight to these companies and demanding no PRC censorship on servers or forums based outside Mainland China. Have a great day/evening!
