The finally published DHS Homeland Threat Assessment shows what we have known for a long time: white power movement violence and affiliated violence is, by far, the greatest terrorist threat to our nation (1)
We are talking about that middle line. And look: "2019 was the most lethal year for extremism in the United States since the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995" (2)
It is inescapable. Experts agree. Watchdogs agree. Whistleblowers agree. Deradicalizers agree. Scholars agree. Everyone, it seems, but the upper echelons of the Trump Administration, and the most unreachable of his base, agree. White power violence has been unleashed (3)
I join the chorus of alarm. I'm very concerned more violence is imminent, and represents a threat to our democracy and to people going about their everyday lives. (4)
Here is a partial list of things the white power movement has done or attempted to do in the past: detonating nuclear power plant as a bomb. Poisoning public water supply with gallons of cyanide. Stealing military weapons (including anti-tank weapons) from posts and armories. (5)
(continued) Assassination of political opponents. Assassination of state troopers, federal judges, people who make television shows, journalists, FBI agents. Murder of unfaithful women. Murder of people in interracial relationships (6)
(continued) Attempt to steal surface-to-air missiles. Establishment of cell-style terrorist network. Use of early internet to post assassination lists. Theft of land mines from military armories. (7)
(continued) Establishment and routine use of paramilitary training camps. Training in urban warfare. Training in field medicine, with focus on post-atomic blast. Training in killing, using targets with caricatures of racial enemies. (8)
(continued) Bombing of gas lines. Bombing of Hoover Dam. Bombing of bridges. Bombing of synagogues. Bombing of ethnic studies classroom. Bombing of Oklahoma City federal building (168 dead, including 19 children). (9)
And in case anyone is confused, this movement is expressly dedicated to the violent overthrow of the United States and the destruction of democracy and its institutions. We have to stand against it. (10)
