there is a machine that grinds people up. every year you get to pick the operator of the machine. one apologizes to people he grinds up, the other laughs. the machine runs on our only food supply. eventually we will run out of food.

some will say the operator who laughs is better at operating the machine and will do so more efficiently. the cruel operator will waste more food. we assume that we will be someone who is spared by the inefficiency of the apologetic operator. that we will eat before food runs out

but the problem is, we see the end of food in sight. we see our numbers dwindle. its more and more likely we will be chopped up. if you are opposed to the machine it makes no difference who is operating it. it is a rejection of the viciousness of the practice.

changing operators feels like you are doing something, when in reality our effort and energy should be put to destroying the machine and those who would run it. we have no more time
