Ok, so, as requested by one of my followers, I'm going to do a thread discussing the hair of my protagonist, Perdita Nightshade. (Art by Hexxart.)
Perdita's hair is actually one of the things that indicate that her heritage is not strictly Human & Orc. While her hair is glossy & appears to be jet black, the way Orc hair almost always is, her hair has something never seen in a pure-blooded Orc - an eggplant sheen.
In my story setting, there are three races that naturally have hair colors that could be compared to those of anime characters - i.e., colors such as green, blue, purple, etc.. Those races are Elves, Gnomes, & Faeries. Thus, in order for Perdita to have an eggplant sheen-
-to her hair, she would need genes from at least one of those three races. In her case, those genes are Elven, specifically Moon Elf (aka, Lunarian.) Perdita's Human father, Nathanael Nightshade (formerly Nuallaen) was a 3rd generation Half-Elf. In my story setting-
-being a Half-Elf, Half-Orc, etc., does not always mean you are 50% Human & 50% Non-Human. The term applies to people up to four generations removed from their Non-Human ancestor, which is typically the maximum number of generations where Non-Human features-
-remain visible. So, a 1st generation Half-Elf is 1/2 Elven, a 2nd generation is 1/4 Elven, a 3rd generation is 1/8 Elven, and a 4th generation is 1/16 Elven, which is the case with Perdita. That means that, in addition to being a 1st generation Half-Orc -
-Perdita is TECHNICALLY also a (4th generation) Half-Elf. But how do her Moon Elf genes give her hair an eggplant sheen? It's not through pigmentation. The truth is that Elves, Gnomes, & Faeries don't actually have hair that is blue, green, purple, etc.. Instead-
-their hair works the same way as certain bird feathers or the wings of certain insects, REFRACTING the light that bounces off of it so that their hair APPEARS to be blue, green, purple, etc.. However, this applies to their hair almost entirely-
-whereas Perdita's hair only appears eggplant colored where the glossy shine is present. These are the best images I could find to illustrate the concept, though they're not perfect examples of the idea.
This means that Perdita's hair only has the eggplant sheen under the right lighting conditions, particularly when she is under direct sunlight, where her hair can look almost entirely eggplant colored. The rest of the time, it's a shiny black.
Another interesting aspect about Perdita's hair is how it responds to humid or dry hair. For some people (myself included,) the more humid the air is, the more frizzy their hair becomes. Perdita's hair inverts this principle. It's smooth in humid air, frizzy in dry air.
Like her mother Orc mother, Neiru Shrewd-Eyes, Perdita's hair is naturally wavy. (She's quite proud of that quality of her hair.) While she did crop it short when she was an early teenager in a fit of pique after an argument with her father, she prefers to keep it long & braided.
She nearly always has two braids coming down from her ears, to frame the sides of her face. These are usually adorned with tube beads
And that's all I have time for at the moment. I'll continue this thread when I'm done with work, but let me know what you guys think of the ideas I've shared so far. There's plenty more to come, so stay tuned!
And, after a LONG grocery run & a nice dinner, I'M BACK!!! Picking up where we left off, I'll need to cover Perdita's default hairstyle to explain how she wears some of the accessories I'm going to describe. These two images will give you the basic idea.
I made the previous images using Hero Forge, which was actually how the concept of Perdita was originally inspired. This hairstyle was part of what got me thinking about a swashbuckling Half-Orc woman in the first place, so it's quintessential Perdita, in my opinion.
The only thing missing from the Hero Forge model that I made is the braids that come down beside Perdita's ears & frame her face from the front. While her hair is somewhat longer than what's on the model, in general, this is the length her hair will be at the start of the series.
Anyway, focusing on this image again, Perdita often adds some accessories to the lower set of braids that wrap around the sides & back of her head. She only decorates the upper pair if she doesn't plan on wearing a hat. As to what those accessories are-
-plain rings like those in the 1st image are the most basic type, but she usually prefers rings that have beads or charms on them. This is actually a practice she picked up from her Orc mother, as Orc women do adorn their hair in this manner regularly.
The charms Perdita uses are quite varied, as she not only acquires them all over the place but also makes them herself. (She makes a lot of her own accessories, in fact.) Sometimes, she also uses small crystals & small seashells or charms, but beads are the most common.
If she REALLY wants to add some bling to the lower braids, she may also run delicate lengths of chain between them. However, this is only when she's not expecting to be in combat situations, as the chains could prove detrimental in a fight. Parties are a different matter.
Another way Perdita likes to pretty up her hair is by weaving ribbons into the braids, both on the sides & in the back. This is most commonly done for balls & fancy banquets, but Perdita also does it when she wants to feel especially feminine.
Of course, the ponytail needs something the hold it together, which is where bows come into the picture. Perdita nearly always has a bow at the end of her ponytail, usually in black or purple, but she'll use any color if it goes with her attire.
At the point where the braids all intersect, Perdita usually adds a barrette that is butterfly shaped. I'm still figuring out the design, but I do know that it is silver, has jewels on it, & possesses several magical functions.
While the barrette is actually held on with a clip, Perdita almost always adds WHAT APPEARS TO BE a hair pin to it. The hair pin looks silver (but is actually Mythril, a magical superconductor) & has gemstones on it, as well as other decorations.
If Perdita wants to make the barrette look extra fancy, she'll add a string of beads to the "hair pin" (usually one she made herself,) as illustrated in these images. So, if the barrette has a clasp, why add a hair pin to it? Well, what better way to hide a Wand in plain sight?
Yes, I said Wand. The "hair pin" is what Perdita calls her "Utility Wand." That is, it's a Wand that is enchanted to do various utilitarian Spells, like stick things together, light a fire, turn screws that have been stripped (she HATES those,) & other practical tasks.
The Utility Wand has a telescoping shaft (no jokes, please,) so it is only revealed as a Wand when she retrieves it & extends it like a collapsible baton being released. Because the Utility Wand is made of Mythril, it is VERY powerful for its size.
The Utility Wand is, admittedly, a bit like the Doctor's Sonic Screwdriver, but I'm limiting the functions that it has & making sure that it isn't the "Wand of Winning" by having it be an easy solution to a problem. It may CONTRIBUTE to the solution, but it is not THE solution.
This actually got me to thinking that, perhaps, Perdita could have small Alchemical Bombs that she disguises as beads on her hair rings. I mean, if she's going to disguise the Utility Wand as a hair pin, why not do the same with other accessories, right?
I'll get into the ULTIMATE hair accessory, the tricorn hat, in a bit, but I think I need to take a short break, so I'll stop here, for now. Stay tuned & let me know what you guys think of these ideas!
Ok, back to work! Perdita's tricorn hat is probably her most versatile item in her entire ensemble, since she can decorate it in so many ways. Her tricorn has a domed top, not a flat top, and the brim has a certain bit of flare to it.
The thing about Perdita's tricorn hat is that it actually has a metal, domed helmet hidden inside of it. This is not purely for protection, however. The helmet also houses the Arcane Matrix that gives the hat various magical functions, most of which are defensive in nature.
However, the most frequently used magical function is the one that makes the hat stick to Perdita's head so it doesn't fall off when she's doing acrobatic & parkour maneuvers. (She's an Adventurer. Her job involves a lot of flipping around.) But the helmet is made-
-from an Adamant-based alloy, so it is SUPER durable. Bullets will bounce right off it & Perdita will barely notice because the metal absorbs the kinetic energy so effectively. This is what's inside the helmet, though, which isn't our main focus, is it?
Firstly, let's talk materials. The tricorn hat is made from Wyvern leather. The particular Wyvern Perdita killed to get the leather (& to stop the Wyvern from eating the livestock of colonists in Arcadia, THE JERK) was a rather unique specimen.
Not only was it capable of using every form of Elemental Energy (& thus had a resistance to all of them,) its hide also had the color changing properties of a chameleon. Though the default color was black, the Wyvern could adopt any shade it chose. This property was-
-carried over into the leather Perdita made from the hide, though setting up the magical functions to control the colors the leather took was rather tricky to do. This means that the tricorn hat (& the rest of her leather garments) can assume many different colors.
Here are a few examples of the colors the hat & ensemble can assume. (Art by Hexxart.) The accessories that go with the hat do not usually change colors, however, though Perdita does have a few that do, such as Phoenix feathers (from a Phoenix friend of hers, in fact.)
The brim of the hat has a number of (silver) studs on it, a bit like what are shown in this image, that are used to hold trim & other accessories on the hat. This enables Perdita to swap out the decorations on the hat to suit her fancy.
The most basic design she uses is some simple trim & a single feather, but, being a fashionista, Perdita is naturally going to try a variety of designs for the hat. (She's always trying new looks. It's a relaxing hobby for her.)
The trims Perdita uses range from feathers to furs to lace to ribbon. For her work as an Adventurer, she usually sticks to ribbon that's of a very durable quality (and that can change colors for camouflage purposes.) However, in some cases, she'll just go without the trim.
Another common accessory for Perdita's tricorn hat is a cockade. These were often used to show political allegiances, military rank, & other things, historically. Perdita sometimes does that with her, but she mostly just uses them to add some flare to her hat.
Typically, there's some kind of decorative pin in the center of the cockade, though Perdita may add additional features, like decorative chain or jewels, just to spice things up. She also makes cockades for people she likes. Or whose hats she thinks look too plain.
In place of a cockade (or just on the other side of the hat,) Perdita may have a decorative brooch that may or may not have a feather attached to it. Perdita picks up brooches all over the place & repurposes them not only for her hat but to spice up then sell for a profit.
And then, of course, we have the feathers. Ostrich feathers are very popular in most cultures Perdita visits, as are peacock feathers, quale feathers, & others. Perdita picks feathers up all over the place in her travels, though she does not necessarily hunt birds for them.
Indeed, thanks to Alchemy, Perdita can take feathers of any bird & DYE THEM in order to make them look more exotic... or just to have them match with her current color pallet. If she's using Phoenix feathers (again, obtained from a friend who's a Phoenix,) then-
-the feathers can change color when her ensemble does. But another thing Perdita does with the feathers she puts in her hat is paint them. This is a cheap way to take ordinary feathers & make them look extra fancy. Perdita likes to give painted feathers to people as gifts, too.
Chain is one more accessory Perdita likes to add to the tricorn hat, usually when she's wearing chain in her hair. As you can tell, this hat gets decorated in a lot of different ways. However, there's one feature I haven't touched on that is constant in all these designs.
On the front of the hat is a silver butterfly that is in the shape of Perdita's insignia. (More on that another time.) This decal has a number of magical functions, one of which is emitting light to act as a headlamp.
While Perdita can get really wild with the way she decorates the tricorn hat (as illustrated in the images below,) most of the time, she keeps things simple: neat trim, cockade and/or brooch, one prominent feather, maybe some chain.
Occasionally, she might add some lacing on top of the dome of the hat or throw on netting to wear as a veil, if the situation calls for a veil (such as at a funeral.) But these are usually reserved for special occasions.
Whatever the case may be, the hat is always done with flourish. Perdita decks out her tricorn hat not only to look good but because she simply loves decorating it. For her, it's a form of art that she gets to wear. No need to go to a gallery; she'll bring it to you!
But Perdita isn't content to decorate her own hat. Oh, no. Not Perdita "Go Big or Go Home" Nightshade. No, she'll decorate anyone's hat if they ask (& sometimes even when they don't ask, if she finds the hat seriously wanting embellishment.) She rarely asks anything in return.
But we'll get more into how Perdita helps people with their fashion another time. I think this concludes all the information regarding Perdita's hair & how she decorates it with accessories. I hope you enjoyed this thread! Let me know what you thought!
