Intro: Boy Meets Evil - a journey into a new era for BTS. It’s been four years since j-hope’s first intro and comeback trailer. Wings was such an iconic album, the themes and concepts were on such a grand scale. #4YearsWithBoyMeetsEvil #JHOPE #BTS #제이홉
I wanted to write this up for the anniversary but couldn’t so I thought I would give it another shot. Again I just like to do these threads for songs or motifs that stand out to me & leave an impact. This is my personal favourite intro out of the ones so far. @BTS_twt
Fire & Save Me ended with “Boy Meets...” & this was a look into the new direction that BTS would be taking after HYYH. I got a lot of my notes from the Wings Concept Book, concept photos, Short Films, the making of the trailer, other clips & RMs live + lyrics & the album itself☺️
As mentioned above HYYH ended with Fire, Save Me & Young Forever. Wings was the next step into the boys journey. I’ve added in translated excerpts from the concept book. (I used Papago so it might not be 100% accurate but you get the drift) BangPD was heavily involved too!
So the concept book explains that there are 3 Parts in this. BOY: Childhood (DAY) - is peaceful, dependent, ideal & moral.
EVIL - temptor dreams, secret desire, primitive & impulse.
NIGHT - Evil fighting, self reliant, personal, wings and world view.

(Papago translation)
At the start of Wings just before BME we got the Short Films. The boys were still dealing with their own issues (DAY) with Jungkooks Begin being the first film things unravelled slowly for each of the guys. Before the EVIL. We then got the concept trailer for BME. @BTS_twt
The comeback trailer starts with an opening line by RM from Demian. This is the boy meeting the devil before he falls too deep into temptation. Hobi says in the making of the trailer that the meeting of evil is a universal feeling & it’s a love story that tackles this feeling.
For the intro Hobi practiced for over a month as it was his first too. The choreography was complex & tricky & he expressed the journey of the song through the dance, facial expressions + the darkness and colours in the trailer portrayed this story. We also see the shadow wings.
Hobi also expresses how BME is a love story which tackles this feeling of love by meeting the devil. However he is unable to give in to such temptation as it’s the wrong time. He expresses this story through his whole body and the set/mood changes throughout.
As we go through the trailer the temptation seeps through and becomes the theme of Wings. Both BME and Blood, Sweat & Tears are the perfect introduction to this new era after the Short Films which give us a taste and ultimately they end up wanting more. (Translation Papago)
“Too bad, too sweet..it’s too evil” A taste of the temptation & unable to resist - love, lust, greed, ambition, succumbing to the devil but when he says “BREATH” it’s that realisation that this overwhelming feeling is too evil to deal with in the end. But BST leads to giving in.
The lyrics are so beautiful he tells the battle with this love story with the devil & he accepts he grabs a taste of this as he was foolish enough but after the pause to BREATHE he realises how evil it really is, it all flashes before him & is better left alone. (Cred Doolset)
I love the depiction of evil through this trailer. The colour palette is really intriguing. At first we start with a darkened purple room in the middle of nowhere. Hoseok just gets up and walks into the room the lyrics start off with him playing with the idea or temptation.
His dance is extremely expressive and he is toying with the idea of giving in the the devil. As the temptation takes to him his facial expressions also change & the purple darkness is overcome with colour as a psychedelic explosion. Similar to his Wings Short Film of MAMA.
I really love how the choreography starts off by being calm however as the song goes on the choreo & room changes represent the complicated feelings he is going through, the darkened room to the UV room is tackling his taste of the “sweet evil”
He continues to switch between the rooms as the music changes too. It was directed so beautifully. Just as the short films & BST. It’s almost as if with every beat + movement of dance the room changes and shows his exploration into the temptation.
The explosion of colour showing his emotions reminded me of his character in the BU. As we know of Hoseoks condition within the BU; for me it was as if he was in a dreamlike state with all the UV colour but once he realises that the evil is too much he “wakes up” from his sleep.
To me it also seemed like he “wakes up after his dance with the devil” too & the UV room then changes once again back to the darkened place he started in. Even though this trailer technically is not in the BU for me it kind of fits Hoseoks story too.
The Faustian and biblical themes are running throughout Wings. The apples shown in the short films being the forbidden fruit. Which I felt like ties in with the lyrics of BME & leads straight into BST. Even though there’s no apples in BME the lyrics reminded me of this theme.
I just want to take a moment to talk about dancer Hobi. He practiced so hard for this & each element of his body expressed the song. He portrayed every emotion: the slow tempo choreo blends seamlessly into the faster tempo he tells that story of inner turmoil & battle so well.
The music starts off with a darker sound. It has a beginning, middle and end. The gradual journey starts with a softer voice, to an expressive rap but I love how his vocals are more sensual with the hook. The heightened & electronic house sounds are incredible. I love how it +
Was produced. The intro sounds so different to all of his other songs. Just another example of his range. This is a fairly short song but the instrumentals are really incredible. And he tops it off by moving to the electronic sounds and chords 🥰+ he doesn’t miss a single beat.
I love the deep bass line but the pause just before the climax leads up to something more. Honestly I love the big build up + finish and the song is just over 2 minutes? It’s such a unique sound. And that’s part of the reason why it’s my fave intro.
Let’s not forget how this song gave us one of the greatest Hobi and Jimin moments EVER at MAMA 2016. The BME and Lie mash up was SUPERB. A performance for the history books.
I just needed to add the video of MAMA 2016 because it’s so beautiful. 😭💜👏❤️ #BTS #JIMIN #JHOPE @BTS_twt
My personal favourite part of the choreography is the way the vibration runs through the song and Hobi uses his hands to imitate the sound. It’s incredible. I mean okay the WHOLE of the choreography is INCREDIBLE. He OWNED it! 💜👏 #JHOPE #BTS
BME & the trailer for this is superb it was SO directed well. Hobi worked hard for his first one and I think he held his own so well. We really got the chance to see a different side to him. It was so layered with a trippy like feeling. I love it so much. Thank you Hobi 🥺💜 #BTS
Finally! Here is the trailer in all its glory. Next time I will be talking about Blood Sweat & Tears! I hope you all enjoyed this as much as I did! Thank you for reading and making it this far! 🥰💜✨
