how to identify les amis in fan art based on both canon and fanon and whats the difference: a thread
art on left by boopliette on tumblr and art on right by r-for-revolution on tumblr
first of all, i have seen every ami drawn as every race and gender identity. there is literally no limit or set interpretation of these things. artists are usually consistent in how they personally see it (i.e. if they draw black!enjolras, they always draw black!enjolras) but
there's no consistency in that through fandom. however, if they are drawing from the movie or a specific production instead of based on the book... that's a different story that i'm not talking about right now.
the 'les amis colors' are ENTIRELY fanon. the only ones that are consistent are enjolras red (he is described as wearing a red coat in the book! a robespierre coat specifically) and grantaire is green in stage productions. the book. does not say that grantaire is green.
what the book DOES say is that 'a skeptic adhering to a believer is as simple as the law of complementary colors' so then grantaire green does make a lot of sense. the rest of the colors are fanon and someone inconsistent for that reason but i'll try to explain.
canon: things we see in a book, movie, tv show, or other media that is a set part of that universe. however, can vary? Movie/Musical Canon places grantaire awake at the barricade, Book Canon says grantaire is asleep the whole time.
fanon: something that we see enough in fan-content that it's GENERALLY accepted as true even if it's not explicitly written in canon. can often be backed up in canon. not everyone believes it, and that's okay, we see media differently.
so. the rest of this thread will be divided by character and i'll explain what's canon and what's fanon about them in most fan art.
