Note on names:
DSD means Differences of sex development, it’s an umbrella name; but doctors who coined terminology in 2006 originally (and in Journals some still!) use Disorder. This galvanised activists who rejected it and felt it represented all the failures of their ‘care’. 1/
Some activists are adamant that using DSD equates medicalisation, early surgery, all things evil (I made last bit up !) and therefore even dismiss and reject dsdfamilies. Rather no support than dsd support.

To reduce polarisation and focus on genuine needs (see: Listen to Us)2/
some people here on social media have begun to use Variations of Sex Development. VSD. It’s basically signalling respect. When eg @IntersexAF uses it I understand: ‘I don’t like Dsd very much because of ‘disorder’ but I know you don’t like intersex so let’s use this’. ...3/
I hope he and others know that when I use VSD I am saying: ‘I respect you don’t like DSD but I really struggle with the intersex narrative and lack of definition ‘. We both know exactly what we’re talking about (ha! Famous last words). 4/
Using VSD is also an objection against the utterly undefined VSC Variations of Sex Characteristics which is now popular in queer studies and among policy makers. VSC means??? everyone can call themselves intersex. (Maybe someone can add the definition by Minister Humza?) 5/
Finally intersex. Most adults &families who live in privacy probably have never thought or associated themselves with that terminology. Other adults are comfortable using it /prefer it probably alongside diagnosis but usually it would/should apply to those with a genuine’VSD’.6/
Now does ‘genuine’ include Klinefelter or Turner? MRKH and CAH? Vast majority would say no. But some say it’s intersex too.
And then you got those who think they can IDENTIFY as intersex. They have no congenital condition affecting sex development but they ‘like’ it. 7/
Some use it or like it over acknowledging or calling themselves trans or non binary.
And when a genuine intersex person objects to their congenital condition with highly specific psychological & medical needs being used in this way, we’re the baddies and transphobic. 8/
I hope I won’t regret posting this, and that it provides insightful information.
If supporting intersex/DSD you may consider using VSD for short. 9/
