Shirou and Kiritsugu Emiya are two individuals with essentially the same ideology, though their ways of attaining their goals are quite different. Let’s start with Kerry-boi. Kiritsugu’s one goal in life is to save all of humanity. The
way he goes about this is by doing what? Killing humans. It all started back when he was a child. Kiritsugu was forced to watch everyone he knew, his friends and loved ones die, solely because of his mage father’s great betrayal, resulting in people turning into literal zombies.
After killing his father, he joins Mercenary Lady in uh mercenaring(???), and starts to truly develop his own worldview. He realizes how far humanity is from salvation and decides it needs a drastic and immediate change. Now, Kiritsugu chooses to, as he says “kill the few to
save the many” meaning he’s ready to sacrifice everyone he loves and even himself just for humanity, if it is needed. This ideology is obviously insane, nuts, mad and every other word you can use for going cray cray.
Now, what Sherry-boi wants to do is completely sacrifice his own life to save not just the many, but everyone. He believes this so strongly solely because Kiritsugu saved his life by the end of the fourth holy grail war. As a result, Shirou consider his own life to be a borrowed
one. He feels that he should have actually died that time. And yet, by living on he managed to save the one who truly needed it the most: Kiritsugu Emiya. As we can see by Archer however, the result of Shirou’s struggles will all be for nothing and he’ll end up a destroyed soul,
eternally fighting without rest or any slight change in sight. Because of this he becomes a heroic spirit, eternally regretting himself and his own ideology. Shirou’s view of the world, much like Kiritsugu, is batshit insane and messed up.
And now to my main point, I personally prefer Shirou’s story and character a tiny bit more than Kiritsugu because Shirou sounds a little less fucked up in the head than him. All in all, they’re both a pair of pretty damn incredible 9/10 characters.
