For those who don’t know, Osime Brown is a Black disabled young man who was imprisoned for being ‘complicit’ in the theft of a phone back in 2018. As well as being sentenced, he also received a deportation order. (1/ ) #StopTheDeportation #FreeOsimeBrown
When Osime was trialed, multiple witnesses said that he did not directly steal the phone, and even encouraged those carrying out the robbery to stop. Imprisonment for any harm or wrongdoing is not the answer, but in this case especially, there is a clear injustice. (2/ )
Yesterday it was announced that tomorrow - 7th October - Osime will be released from prison and reunited back home with his family in Birmingham, rather than being transferred to a detention centre, which was originally scheduled. This is a huge win. (3/ )
However, the deportation order is still active. That is, the Home Office could still send him ‘back’ to Jamaica, where he was born and lived only until 4. I just want anyone reading this - particularly those who are white, abled, neurotypical - to imagine that for a second. (4/ )
Osime was in and out of care homes throughout childhood - this undeniably has a negative effect on one’s development and mental health. He has severe autism and other learning disabilities, and dyslexia. Osime also struggles with PTSD and depression. (5/ ) #StopTheDeportation
Now, all of these experiences would be compounded by his time inside prison, some of which was spent in solitary confinement, due to COVID-19 (ie. the awful conditions of prisons and the way the prison service are handling the pandemic). (6/ )
So I really want to know how the government expect Osime to survive - let alone thrive - after being deported and forced to go back to Jamaica, somewhere he hasn’t been since 4 years old, somewhere he is completely unfamiliar with, and does not call home? @ukhomeoffice (7/ )
The truth is, they know this would be the case. @ukhomeoffice do not care about Black lives. The lives of disabled people. This has been shown time and time again. We need to continue to put pressure on them to revoke the deportation order. #FreeOsimeBrown (8/ )
I’m sickened, frustrated, heartbroken by Osime’s situation, and the violence he has received from the state so far throughout his life. He has a right to remain in Britain and be with his family, where he belongs. #StopTheDeportation (9/ )
Not to mention, the anxiety alone that Osime must be facing with the threat of being deported any moment hanging over his head. What are you planning to do about his situation, @RobertBuckland ? Considering you are Secretary of State for ‘Justice’. #StopTheDeportation (10/ )
True justice would be to not subject Black people, disabled people, to these experiences in the first place. The best we can get now is having the deportation order retracted. I’m calling on @ukhomeoffice and @RobertBuckland to act now. #StopTheDeportation #FreeOsimeBrown (11/11)
Also should clarify that the information in this thread is mainly taken from the petition page itself (not written by me), and the information provided on social media by Osime’s family and close network. Just tweeting it to help spread the word.
