Don't freak out about "distanced" Thanksgiving and Christmas: a short thread…
So a lot of Canadians are freaking out because Thanksgiving is going to be socially distanced & a lot of people are looking at Christmas and…

I'm here to tell you, in all sincerity: you got this! You'll do fine.

How do I know? Because Canada's Jews have done this already. 1/8
Sometimes people assume the Channukah is the "Jewish Christmas" (because, timing) but it's a really minor holiday. Channukah's like, I guess, Victoria day: fun but not a big deal. People ask "how can you be alone on Christmas?" No one asks "how can you be alone on Channukah?" 2/8
No, the "Jewish Christmas" is _Pesach_.

That's the one people fly across the country for. People _absolutely_ ask "how can you be alone on Pesach?" and move heaven and earth to take you in if you are. Noise, food, old family traditions.

This year Pesach arrived April 8. 3/8
The midst of the First Wave. I know somebody who _did_ fly across the country, and spent two weeks quarantined in her parents' spare room: it was that important to her.

Most of us learned to use Zoom (remember when Zoom was unfamiliar?!). We had… 4/8
…a "Seder Plate Cam" set up for all our friends. That's like a Christmas Tree Cam, I guess.

And you know what? It was fine. In fact it was more than fine, it was kind of lovely.

Somehow having to think about everything we did made it extra special. "I made this effort … 5/8
… so I could be with _you_." It was a Pesach to remember fondly.

Since then we've done "distanced" Rosh Hashanah, "distanced" Yom Kippur (!), & now we're in the middle of "distanced" Sukkot (think Easter & New Year's). We're getting by, & getting better, just like everyone. 6/8
Just like you.

So don't worry that Christmas won't be "Christmas" this year. I tell you from experience: it will be. It will be warm and sweet and nice, even if you have to make do with less.

And if you find yourself fretting that it won't be the same, … 7/8
… take a moment to think of the millions around the world who've lost a loved one to this plague. And call your mum.

So don't worry, my Goyish friends, you got this. It'll be fine. It'll be more than fine.

And, as a great Jew once wrote: may your days be merry and bright. 8/8
