Let's discuss. What is your first reaction when you are on duty, admitted a Px and the Px relative says "Pls can you speak to Dr ABC?He wants to talk to you, pls"
Do you feel irritated/angry or do you oblige?
I have been at both ends of the phonecall so I will share..
...First,if you are the one on duty and a phone call comes in saying another Dr wants to speak to you, pls dont become defensive or put up a wall. Be polite and trust that you are doing the best for ur Px with what you have at hand. This doesn't mean you couldn't have skipped...
...something(it is possible) but your politeness and confidence will reassure the other Dr that you knw ur job and if u are a Junior Dr, u can say your Seniors are yet to review. Nothing wrong with that. Truly, the other Dr on the call actually just needs reassurance and isn't...
..judging,most times. Some just want to have the real clinical info as the relative present might not be able to exactly say what the diagnosis is and believe me,if u communicate well, the phone Dr will calm ur Px relative down more than u. This is fact. So pls be polite,it won't
cost you much to be. Yes, there are a few phone Drs who might begin to sound arrogant and start saying, have u done this, wont you order this Inv? Let him/her knw that u are on that and if you still feel the arrogance overflowing, tell him u have to go and attend to the Px now...
...and leave. But sincerely, BE POLITE. Why? One day, believe me, you will be the Phone Dr and you will understand how it feels. I have had these experiences so many times. I also know some Drs can disturb more than normal once their person is under ur care, oblige as much as u can
And when u cant,ignore subtly.
Then if you are the Dr on the phone that wants to speak to the Dr managing your Px, pls understand first that u must be as polite as a sheep. DO NOT pull ranks(even if you are a Prof), it will only backfire. Nobody likes to be intimidated. So don't
try to talk down on anyone even if the admitting Dr is an Intern. DON'T. You are hurting the rapport the Px and the admitting Dr/team should http://have.You  have caused more harm than good niyen.
DO NOT IMPOSE any treatment regimen even if you are Kumar,Clark or Badoe.
You can suggest but be subtle and ask questions. The Mgt plan of the team might be specific to the health facility or environ where ur relative is. Be calm and trust that your Hippocratic brothers will do their best for ur Px. U actually can't do much.
Also DO NOT FRUSTRATE them
With ur meddling...Respect their time. Do not pander to the wiles of ur relative who may feel once they call u,u will call them. Patients can abuse privilege so don't let them abuse your Hipp brethren.
DO NOT CRITICISE the Tx plan in the ears of the Px. You can take them out of
The hosp if u really feel you are not comfy with the Tx plan. Why? If u are far away, your pple might still come back to the same Drs u criticized. Be wise.
And if u are in the abroad or city where u have all the facilities to practice, DO NOT CONDESCEND on ur brethren. Drs are..
Not the ones to equip public hosp and even the private can only run on the available fund it has.
In summary, BE WISE and POLITE.
What are ur thoughts on these? Share you experience if u have been on both sides of the phone call.
Be safe....
