The lovely @BiddyHD1 asked what advice I’d give other young people starting in creative industries and honestly... I’ve been thinking about it ever since.

Obviously listen to the podcast but I wanted to share it here for anyone who’s feeling a bit lost, especially today. 1/ https://twitter.com/mylastorderpod/status/1313452161771229190
Firstly, take all advice with a pinch of salt.

That being said; lots of people in media aren’t exceptional- they just know exceptional people.

Don’t be embarrassed to ask for help- how do you think these jokers got to where they are now? 2/
Find mentors.

Force big hitters who are talking the talk to walk the walk. One response to a DM does not a mentor make.

If you can’t find mentors, find your peers. Link up w/ people who are making moves that you respect & build your own support system.

Champion each other. 3/
Working class, Black & Brown, LGBTQ+ kids;

If you feel like you’re failing despite taking all the advice and doing all the right things, bear in mind that all systems currently in place are designed to make you fail.

It’s okay to feel tired, you’re swimming against the tide. 4/
If you can’t see anyone who looks like you doing what you want to do- that DOES NOT mean you don’t belong there.

It means there’s a spot begging to be filled by you and your passion and your talent.

Just because they can’t ‘see a place for you’ doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. 5/
Don’t feel bad if someone you respect tells you no.

It will help you to keep assessing what it really is you want to do (because that will change).

Keep doing you.

Persist.

We need you.

Keep in mind that all this^ is coming from a person who trained as a lawyer, then left to become a creative at a time when the govt is telling people in the arts to retrain into more stable professions looooooool 🙃
