A thread looking at Chelsea's squad depth and available options this season.
Please do note that the XI is not set in stone and things can change a lot.

I will now try to award the depth in each position a mark out of 10 based on the quality and variety.

I do not award marks easily so you might feel I am being strict, please bear with me.
Some players like Mount and Havertz are very versatile and can play in a variety of positions. I have not mentioned all their positions because it will unnecessarily clog up space.

Mentioning Mount as a LW, for example, is pointless when we have three other options there.
GOALKEEPERS

Edouard Mendy is a solid but unspectacular goalkeeper who should provide security in the short-term. Whether he becomes Chelsea's long-term number 1 will depend on his own development.

Caballero and Kepa are acceptable deputy choices.

Rating: 7.5/10
RIGHT BACKS

Both Reece James and Azpilicueta are excellent players, giving us two high-level options at right-back. They will both play plenty too and each has their own set of pros and cons.

Rating: 8/10
CENTRE BACKS

Zouma and Thiago Silva are seemingly our first-choice centre-backs. Tomori is an excellent third choice. Christensen and Rudiger can be used in "weaker" games but when everyone is fit, the first three choices should play as much as possible.
CENTRE BACKS - CONTINUED

We have plenty of centre-backs but one gets the impression there is no Van Dijk-esque commanding figure. All our centre-backs have flaws, in some cases huge ones. I can understand why people might want to give 8 or 7 too.

Rating: 7.5/10
LEFT BACKS

Chilwell is a superb first-choice but beyond him, there is not a lot of quality there. Alonso is an excellent wing-back but not a full-back. Emerson is not particularly good. Don't be surprised if Azpilicueta plays a few games at LB.

Rating: 7/10
CENTRE MIDFIELD

Not many teams have a player of Kante's quality. Kovacic, Jorginho and Gilmour are all thoroughly good players in their own right too. However, some of our midfielders are not suited to the league and some are not suited to each other.
CENTRE MIDFIELD - CONTINUED

The midfield topic is complex and needs to be explained in a different thread of its own. I am working on it. As of now, our midfield is flawed but given our strengths elsewhere, we can get away with it. Finding the right combo is key.

Rating: 7/10
RIGHT WING

Ziyech is one of the best playmakers in the business and provided he adapts to the league, we will have no issues there if he is fit. Hudson-Odoi is a very able deputy too. Creative passing is the forte of both our RWs.

Rating: 8/10
ATTACKING MIDFIELD

We have two very bright young players in this spot. Havertz is clearly the first choice but Mount is no slouch either. Bear in mind Havertz can play RW/CF, Mount can play LW and both can play together in a 4-3-3 if required.

Rating: 8.5/10
LEFT WING

Pulisic, Hudson-Odoi and Werner provide great options here. 1v1 ability, risk-executing ability, off the ball movement, willingness to shoot, the players have a wide array of strengths. One of the strongest spots in the squad.

Rating: 9/10
CENTRE FORWARD

Werner and Abraham are two of the world's best young strikers. Most teams will consider themselves lucky to have one of them - we have both. They'll both play a lot and score a lot. Giroud is a phenomenal third option too.

Rating: 9/10
