okay this is my thread for the day and its about how universities put up so many barriers for graduate students to make extra money to survive.
So, my girl @Kunda_Kentay invited me to speak to a group of women undergraduates at UT about social media activism and etc.
Now, she's my girl and I woulda done it for the free but she informs me they have a small budget for an honorarium of $150ish and I said dope
Well, I am excited to just do a favor for @Kunda_Kentay and know that this is what its all about, looking out for each other
So then, she reaches out to her boss and gets a message stating something that sends both of us.
They have looked me up in the system and see I work 30 hours so they don't think they can pay me. Now here's the thing: what does my 30 hours of weekly work have to do with me speaking to some students and getting compensated for my time?
So in order for me to receive compensation, I have to tell them my academic advisor because she has to sign off on it as well as SIX OTHER PEOPLE!
Y'all, for $150
So I tell @Kunda_Kentay don't fucking worry about it girl. I'll do it for free like this is ridiculous
She's like no sis, i am getting you your coin because you don't have to do this.
Y'all so I have to sign a form
and then my advisor, who already is busy, has to sign a form (and now I have to explain to her whats going on) and then 5 other folks have to sign it.
Who are these folks determining if graduate students can or cannot get paid for their expertise?
Why is it such a hassle to pay for the students/people on campus instead of bringing someone from off-campus? Why wouldn't we want to encourage current students?
And the thing is: this isn't the first time this has happened.
The fact that we are overworked and underpaid but the university can still dictate how we make extra money to survive is exhausting and frustrating.
Why are there barriers for students, especially students of color, to be compensated for the work we do? Why are there all these excuses to why institutions cannot (read as will not) pay? Why tf do I need SEVEN signatures of folks I don't even know to sign off on $150?
All in all: pay fucking graduate students. Pay us what we deserve. Dont make it difficult to for us to make extra money to make ends meet.
