thread of how i think Time Lord gender works! (not tryna start more drama! idek if anyone cares about this, i just like talking about Time Lord gender & it makes me happy, i never really say stuff about it on main but i'm tired of not talking about things just bc of cis people)
ok so in World Enough and Time, the Doctor says "[the Time Lords] are billions of years beyond your petty human obsession & its associated stereotypes". i like to think this means Time Lords don't use gender labels (like man, woman, trans, nonbinary, etc) for themselves at all
but obv if they want to then there's nothing stopping them! they'd have to be really into earth culture to know about these labels, but the Doctor loves humans & never really fit in with the Time Lords so the thought of them trying out terms like nonbinary & pansexual makes me đŸ„ș
anyway so i think all Time Lords are inherently genderless. they can have preferences for what type of body they like to have but i don't think it has anything to do with identity, they're just vibing. also they can basically be the human definition of trans; they can transition
if they'd be more comfortable with another type of body, they can use only one set of pronouns or multiple sets or any, etc. it just wouldn't be labeled as being trans to them or anyone else on Gallifrey bc they just don't think about it like that
this brings up the topic of sexuality! every ship involving at least one Time Lord is inherently gay bc Time Lords are already genderless!! (i'm kinda joking but also 100% serious dkdkjdjd) i don't think they label their sexualities either bc they already experience gender much
more differently than humans do & the terms we use for ourselves could never apply to them bc they can't understand how we see gender & vice versa. again, Time Lords who are really into human culture & want to use these terms are the exception! i think in general the Doctor likes
to call themself pansexual, but sometimes they're not comfy with that. like with Thirteen, ik me & a lot of others feel kinda weird about her being with a man (Dhawan!Master doesn't count, he is a Time Lord & thus is not a man) & i think she would vibe with being called a lesbian
ok i think that's p much it for how i feel about Time Lords' gender in general, if i think of anything else then i'll add it later! so moving on to the Doctor & the Master specifically, i've mostly seen people call the Doctor nonbinary & the Master genderfluid. i think that
nonbinary is the closest word that can describe the Doctor's gender, bc they just don't care about it. for the most part, you can use any pronouns or any terms (like king/queen/dude/sis/etc) & as long as it's being done respectfully then they'll be comfy with it. however, i don't
personally think genderfluid is accurate for the Master bc i view their portrayal of gender as entirely performative. like Missy presents more fem than her past regenerations that we've seen & she uses phrases like Time Lady to describe herself. to me, this has nothing to do with
identity & is just her having fun with the way she presents. i don't think Missy would use he/him pronouns but wouldn't really mind, & all her other selves use any pronouns (the Lumiat using he/him hits differently đŸ„ș)
so like i said before, in general the Doctor doesn't really care what people see them as. Thirteen is kinda complicated bc while they do genuinely like being perceived as a woman, it's also very difficult for them to adjust to & causes what could be the equivalent of dysphoria
they were so excited in The Woman Who Fell to Earth when Yaz called them "madam" & in Spyfall Part 1 they refer to it as an "upgrade". but as we've seen in other episodes, they've expressed they're not entirely comfortable with it. they've spent billions of years being seen as a
man & while they do enjoy the change, it's still hard for them. like in The Ghost Monument when they automatically call themself daddy instead of mummy, or in Demons of the Punjab when there's groups split into men & women & they're a bit confused about which group they should go
with, or in Spyfall Part 2 when they call themself a man & then mutter to themself that this happens "every time", implying that them forgetting most people see them as a woman now is an occasion that happens a lot more than we've seen on screen. in my opinion, it makes most
sense that they'd be most comfortable with he/they pronouns & masc terms. they still like she/her & fem terms, but it's just a bit difficult when they're p much Always being seen as a woman
think i'm gonna bring this thread to a close now, stan the Corsair who uses they/them pronouns in every regeneration no matter what they look like!!!!
these are all my personal thoughts, if you have different headcanons then you're 100% valid!! i love talking about this topic & if anyone wants to discuss it with me, even if we differ in ideas i'd love to talk about it with you as long as you're respectful!!!!
thank you for reading through all this if you did, stan our favorite genderless alien 💗
