Women are getting the worst of this recession
But it turns out there’s a huge marriage story we’ve been missing
Married women lost almost 1 million jobs last month.
(single men gained 1.2 million)

In fact, ALL of women's job gains since June have been from single women

Since June we’ve regained ~4.6 million jobs (averaging 2 @BLS_gov measures) https://fred.stlouisfed.org/graph/?g=wsRQ
>100% of jobs gains have gone to single people, men & women

This REALLY looks like a back to school story, esp for women.
Job losses in September wiped out all the July and August job gains for married people, while non-married people, particularly men, have opened a huge gap.

The gender gap is alive and well.
This summer has been a single man’s recovery
Single women, who are much more likely to be parents, have regained some of the initial job loss.
Not as strongly as single men tho
But these marriage gaps…

Caveats:
1)Doing marriage b/c no mothers & fathers yet (it’s coming), so child care story != perfect match
2)So much in September, hoping it’s driven by seasonal adjustment (which is v hard rn)
3)These are household survey data, so don’t line up w/ payrolls #s
