Do you notice how in the story of the prodigal son; the son, after having squandered all his inheritance planned to go back to beg his father to allow him be a ‘mere servant’?

He had considered all his options and thought to himself: “It makes no sense for me to continue suffering here. Even my father’s servants back home currently get better treatment than me. I’m better off being one of them.”
In his mind, there was no way his father would consider him a son anymore. Not after what he did. Not after how he left. Not after how irresponsible he had been as a son.
But what does the Bible say happened when he returned?
“So the young son set off for home. From a long distance away, his father saw him coming, dressed as a beggar, and great compassion swelled up in his heart for his son who was returning home...

... So the father raced out to meet him. He swept him up in his arms, hugged him dearly, and kissed him over and over with tender love.”

Lol whattt. If he knew that his father would be THAT receptive and in fact, happy, maybe he would not have bothered staying that long. He’d have come home sooner.
The prodigal son was hesitant to return because he had a picture in his mind of how his father was going to react.
He knew what he deserved and assumed he’d get just that.
He felt far away but he was *so wrong* about how His father felt about Him.

“Then the son said, ‘Father, I was wrong. I have sinned against you. I could never deserve to be called your son. Just let me be—’ “The father interrupted and said, ‘Son, you’re home now!’
“Turning to his servants, the father said, ‘Quick, bring me the best robe, my very own robe, and I will place it on his shoulders. Bring the ring, the seal of sonship, and I will put it on his finger. And bring out the best shoes you can find for my son...
Let’s prepare a great feast and celebrate. For this beloved son of mine was once dead, but now he’s alive again. Once he was lost, but now he is found!’ And everyone celebrated with overflowing joy.”

Perhaps you’re somewhat like that prodigal son right now.
Not only do you feel condemned, you’re so sure you deserve the condemnation.
The GOOD NEWS is, in Christ, we don’t get what we deserve. We get what was freely given to us.

Your feelings and your spiritual reality are not always the same. Listen, you may have had or are currently experiencing a down time because you left God’s way, rolled in the mud, fed the swine, ate with them and started feeling dirty.
Even then, God keeps running after you. Offering you the best robe, the fattest cow, a precious ring.
He is aware of what we deserve, yet he calls us His own because of the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. Come home.
