Last night was very hard for front line workers

When Leo made that first speech in March, we felt a unity of purpose, a sense of team, that made it easier to step into the unknown

The mess that was yesterday & last night has shown us

That we & our patients are alone this time
(2) we look to Winter with the memory that the last one was worst on record

We see the people leading us squabble & undermine in public

Each episode of which undermines the social cohesion needed

To flatten the curve again

We are worried for our patients & our teams
(3) we know that the expansion in capacity has not been quick enough

We worry for patients with cancer who need an ICU bed this Winter

For patients with sepsis

For patients with AAAs who need urgent elective repair before it ruptures

For elderly people on trollies
(4) the list goes on

If like me, you felt both sickened & let down by yesterday

Remember it was never them

The leadership was every one of us

Who stayed home

Who washed our hands, kept our distance & wore a mask

We did it in March

We can do it again now
(5) but we should remember when we vote

That we want people who will be accountable for their decisions

Who will learn & adapt

Two decades of a lack of investment in public health & public hospitals have come home to roost

A decade of ignoring a report that said it was
(6) essential to double ICU capacity by 2020

That’s not on NPHET

That’s political inaction & implementation deficit disorder

Patients deserve better & so do healthcare workers
(7) position of NPHET is so tough

Blamed & scapegoated when the advice is unpalatable

I know some of the people on it: very decent committed public servants

NPHET advise, government decide & government must be accountable for same
(8) we can do this together

Public squabbling by senior decision makers must stop

Transparency on decision making key
(9) people that are nervous of what this means in health this Winter

Healthcare workers will do our level best for you & with you

Political leaders need to do better, less deflection & mud slinging, more accountability & leadership

We can do this together
