Honest talk, Psy's music is not bad. Not at all. It's not like he MADE Kpop a joke—because he didn't intend for his song to blow up like that—it's the WEST who treated his music as a joke and stereotyped Kpop.+ https://twitter.com/hiliija/status/1313209736607805440
This is why nobody really found immediate success, even after Psy was breaking barriers. A lot of Westerners saw Gangnam style and thought that was all Kpop, or even Asian music in general, was. But that has nothing to do with Gangnam Style and everything to do with prejudice.+
So when people say that nobody really treated Gangnam style seriously in America, please understand that people are saying that because Westerners didn't bother to research other Kpop acts. So while he did break innumerable records, he still faded back into Korea.+
People still know him, of course, since Gangnam Style will never be forgotten, but in terms of tangible impact, he's no longer on the charts and he's not nominated for any awards present day in the West. He doesn't have as many sales, either. The GP moved on from him.+
That's another point I want to bring up. Majority of the hype from Gangnam Style was from the GP, which means that when they decided to focus on another act, the difference in attention towards his work was noticeable.+
Of course, what he did in the West is still legendary and should be respected, but people are not wrong to point out the stereotypes that manifested after Gangnam Style. (But again, totally not his fault. It's stereotyping Westerners' fault.)
