The story for ‘Hocus Pocus’ came about after writer David Kirschner invented a bedtime story for his kids. He later wrote the story up and submitted it to ‘Muppet Magazine’, where it gained recognition. #MFMovieMondays
Before it was #HocusPocus, the script was bought by Disney under a different title: ‘Halloween House.’ #MFMovieMondays
To pitch the story to Disney, the writers of #HocusPocus added a little ambiance by having execs enter a dark room with broomsticks and a vacuum cleaner hanging from the ceiling. #MFMovieMondays
They also scattered 15 pounds of candy corn throughout the room in an effort to invoke Halloween nostalgia. Obviously, it worked! #HocusPocus #MFMovieMondays
The role of Max in #HocusPocus was originally offered to Leonardo DiCaprio (makes sense). But the future Oscar-winner turned it down in order to make ‘What’s Eating Gilbert Grape’ (the movie that earned Leo his first Oscar nomination). #MFMovieMondays
By the way, Bette Midler has said that #HocusPocus is her favorite film out of everything she’s done. #MFMovieMondays
Many different black cats were used for Binx because each one served a different purpose—one would jump on command, one was good at cuddling, etc.
Every time a new cat was used, the kid actors would have to train with it using treats and a clicker to get the kitty to trust them. They got sick of it. #HocusPocus #MFMovieMondays
Oh, Sarah Jessica Parker, a.k.a. Sarah Sanderson, is definitely a descendent of a real Salem witch. #HocusPocus #MFMovieMondays
She went on the show ‘Who Do You Think You Are’ to trace her family history and discovered she is related to Esther Elwell.
Esther Elwell was one of the women accused of being a witch during the Salem Witch Trials after a girl said she saw Esther’s “spectre” (basically her spirit) strangling her neighbor.
If you look closely, you can see the wires on Mary Sanderson’s broom throughout the movie. #HocusPocus #MFMovieMondays
