We've all read stories about "lunch debt" in the US – schools taking kids' lunch, forcing them into debt, ppl doing "heartwarming" fundraisers to buy out these kids' debt. WELL! Let me tell you how NY is doing the literal exact commie opposite! All public school families are
receiving a $420 EBT (food benefits) card in the mail. Why? During normal times, all kids get free school lunch. No means test. Poor kids don't feel different. Well, during school closure March-June, kids missed lunch. So we're all getting $420 in food benefits
This results in pretty well-off people receiving "food stamps."
They can't be transferred, so if you want to donate your $420 to a food pantry (a great thing to do!), you need to buy the groceries yourself (and take them to a pantry, or just buy yourself some groceries and donate equivalent $ instead)
THIS IS POSSIBLE. NY has its share of problems, but little socialism baby steps? Done. Are we destigmatizing using benefits? Hell yes we are. I am pleased! I pay more than $420 in increased taxes to live here and I am still pleased because I am not a shitlord.
