an accurate take on the Men Of Tumblr tierlist, az done by someone whoz been interested in thiz topic for a while!
i feel like people often forget tumblr men are broken up into three categoriez, not juzt sexymen and thatz it. you wouldnt say bill cipher and benrey are two men wearing the same colored hat, would you?
even then, that doeznt go to juzt tumblr men. men of other sitez are also categorized similarly!
lemme actually give some reasoning for thiz bc im feeling like it
1. tumblr sexymen — sexymen in general, really — do exist. nobody can deny that fact without looking like an idiot. that being said they arent the only genre of -man and never have been
i always bring up specific funnymen and kinniemen when i say this. take komaeda for example. nagito komaeda was a big character but "komaeda kinnie" was a word people shot at each other a lot back in the day. it was a word for an outsider, a freak
someone who would kin the likes of nagito komaeda was both something to gawk at and push aside because they were just like the rest of them at the time. and that was certainly true, komaeda kinnies were everywhere. thats why we have the Komaeda Finger Story.
thats why we have labels like kinnieman. theyre used for men who were kinned in such grand numbers that it was massively known and influential, sometimes negatively so. komaeda is just one side of a coin with the onceler on the other end
so where do funnymen come in? funnymen have an influence, too! one similar (though usually less impactful, theyre primarily used for memes and not spiritual/sexual connections like kinniemen or sexymen) to other tumblr men ive discussed before
a funnyman like guzma is certainly influential enough to where his mark on internet culture and history is one to at least point out. he was big! your boy, guzma. and thats why hes a funnyman; a man known for his funnies, not for his looks or personality
those are the three main categories of -men. theyre good to keep in mind! if youre me, at least, and love infodumping about this stuff whenever you can
2. this is when i get into the topic of men from other social media sites, not tumblr. because you dont have to be on tumblr to make your mark! all aspiring -men can come from anywhere theyd like so long as they have the needed appeal.
lets say...sans. sans would be a great example of both a hybridman (a fusion of two different -man categories, though usually one is more prominent than the other) and a non-tumblr sexyman sexyman
sans absolutely had an impact on the internet in so many ways and if you say that isnt true youre a fool in a mans shoes. with that said most of that impact on the sexyman side of things came from a place much much different from tumblr.
sans' influence came from youtube. we wouldnt have things like the sans fangirl cringe compz or the Sans Fangirl Drama (a whole new topic to cover, one very much unrelated to sans at this point) without this youtube influence of his
and because of this he isnt a tumblr sexyman. his influence wasnt primarily from tumblr, though a portion of it did come from there. its all about what makes up the most of the percentage.
3. i shouldnt need to explain why real people cannot be sexymen, kinniemen (god no), or funnymen. if you need it though ill be happy to elaborate
CONCLUSION: in the end this all takes me back to something my s/o once said. that a lot of these men arent truly -men, but men who were -men to their particular fandom circle (thanks for that btw, button)
and this is true for so many men we claim to be -men of any kind. its gotten so bad that some people are forgetting that even true sexymen are sexymen at all
of course, you dont have to take the -man business as seriously as i do. but its fun to recognize the holes in the fabric that weve come together to create, yknow?
