Some other things I said not captured today re: @UWindsor and their second announcement about anti-Black racism: 1) this is exactly what I said they’d do back in June. The hiring of these two Black individuals is not progress, it’s repetitive and boring because... https://twitter.com/cbcwindsor/status/1313236854829768706
We’ve been here before. In 2008/09 when Students Against AntiBlack Racism were active, they hired a Black student from that collective to “consult.” From there nothing was done and the organizing was derailed. Also, how come there was no hiring process for these two positions?
Meaning: under what terms did these two individuals come to be picked? What does it mean to be handpicked by the university rather than an open call? Also, let’s be very clear about Jeremiah: throughout my entire year working for UWSA I consistently heard from Black students that
the UWSA under his leadership was consistently neglecting Black students and not substantively dealing with issues of antiBlack racism as a student union. Many pointed out a particularly close relationship he had with the presidents. ALSO the Black caucus that he leads is
a direct result of not his work, but the work of Black women queer and trans students who actually put themselves at risk with CFS when the antiBlackness of Indigenous and racialized students in student organizing was (and is) endemic. He just hopped on a ticket y’all.
In terms of the use of reports, I clearly stated that the university has done several reports, all of which are no longer available publicly. There was the Allen Report on Racism and Discrimination done in 2007. There was the Working Group in Equity Review Report done in 2005
There was the Senate Advisory Committee on Diversity and Inclusion Report done in 2008. There’s even the CFS Taskforce on Campus Racism. There’s enough reports done that the @UWindsor didn’t take up seriously, so WHY do we need another taskforce or report?
The reality is we don’t, these are tactics of the University to it actually deal with substantive demands. I said the University has the capacity to end their partnership with police NOW. The refusal to do so should be indicative enough of the fraudulence of this announcement
I also pointed out that the University says it wants to eradicate antiBlack racism, yet as a Black queer student organizer when I try to do that work in “social justice” @WindsorLaw I’ve been called by my peers (some Black and racialized):
Mentally ill and deranged, extremist, emotional terrorist, skilled sociopath, aggressive, bitch. I spent my summer having a Black student lodge a vexatious complaint for publicly naming my reality on this campus, including dynamics that include students.
The University cannot claim you want to eradicate antiBlack racism when this is the current state of affairs. The University policies made this vexatious and antiBlack complaint possible while simultaneously doing nothing to protect me.
Finally, I said the only reason why these two Black people got a job, and the University continues to even engage antiBlack racism is because for those of us who actually take up antiBlack racism without seeking self-benefit, we’ve been collectively maintaining this energy
I said @ScholarStrikeCa and the student version last week were moments that are attempting to have us remain and push us forward. I pointed out the quick slide from anti-Black racism to equity, diversity and inclusion in the new announcement as indicative of where this is going
I said that addressing antiBlack racism is a studied practice that requires rigorous and radical methodologies. Not everyone actually takes the time to learn and use these—the slip to EDI shows they don’t have these skills necessary for ameliorating the conditions of ABR
I said, to quote @idilatweets and @blacklikewho from #BlackLife none of this meets the Black Test. So every Black person should tread cautiously in response to these two Black individuals hired by the University, and to do the work of remaining publicly honest about what we see
Also, IM TIRED of the solicitations of lived experiences used to legitimize these ethically bankrupt process and practices. Be Black but be honest about the fact that you’re the Black person in the way 🤷🏾‍♂️ again there are many texts that would tell you this.
I should also clarify that there are Black people who take up these kinds of positions and work who, based on how they consistently hold themselves publicly when it comes to Black Life, we can hold with less caution. Who we see doing the work. I’m not talking sideways at them
