I am feeling deflated after just teaching a lecture on LGBTQ+ identities in my Principles of Sociology course. As soon as I put up the acronym in the chat, multiple students abruptly left the class and more continued to leave as I went through the lecture. 1/3 #AcademicChatter
This has never happened before. Now, I can't for certain say it was because they are uncomfortable and were showing their displeasure as it can also be about safety (their being at home and not wanting others to hear maybe), but it really stung.
Usually, because I teach so many LGBTQ students, these are some of my best classes. I guess you can't win them all, but it was pretty rude as a whole and is another example of heterosexism in the academy. Perhaps, it was because this homosexual didn’t beg for acceptance.
