Ok hold on, I get why some artists do this out of sheer stubbornness but I just want to make sure you all know that if you’re working in photoshop (I believe CSP too) you can simply check “auto-select” on the move tool and click the dot you’re trying to find the layer for

Oh and! If you’re struggling to use the auto-select feature because you have lots of texture or effects layers on top of your drawing, generally I just group them and temporarily toggle the group off. As long as it’s set to “pass through” all layer effects still work in a group.
It’s super cool to post a tip like this and have other artists share more options+app shortcuts—thank you to all who chimed in! What’s not cool is leaving comments like “Seriously? Who doesn’t know this?” bc the answer is a lot of people who are self-taught and/or still learning.
That’s just not helpful to anyone and it can even make people feel belittled. Yes there are lots of resources available online but often folks don’t know what specific terms to search for and get overwhelmed so please just be kind and use that energy to encourage ppl instead ok?
See in my screenshot where it says “layer” in the dropdown next to “auto-select”? I’d wager you have “group” selected in that dropdown menu rather than layer like I do. Try switching it then try again :) https://twitter.com/drizzlingrose/status/1313394498173571072
