Thread on Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) !!
Made by someone with APD :)
What is APD?
APD is a disorder affecting the ability to understand speech. The most common symptoms are:
- understanding speech in noisy environments
- filtering out similar sounds
- needing things repeated constantly
- difficulty following directions
- sensitivity to sounds
How is it caused?
There is currently no 'cause' linked to APD, though researchers speculate it might be caused from pre-mature birth or head trauma. It is considered a learning disability in the DSM.
Comorbid conditions with APD?
The most common disorders that can co-exist with APD are:
- ADHD/ADD
- Autism
- Tics and Tourette's
- Dyslexia
- Aphasia
and more!!
it's most comorbid with ADHD, with it affecting 50% of ADHDers
How to know if you have it?
If you struggle with keeping track of conversations, understanding speech in noisy environments, needing captions when watching a show, constantly struggle with following specific directions, understanding the lyrics in a song, you probably have APD.
What can you do to help?
These are some of the things that has helped me manage APD:
- Learning sign language as an easier way to communicate
- Using captions when watching or listening
- Try to get 1 on 1 with a teacher if you can
- hearing aids (haven't tried but heard it helps)
- occupational therapy
and probably some more
If I should add anything tell me in the comments
A few misconceptions about APD:
- APD does not affect hearing, those with APD can hear perfectly well but have troubles with processing sounds.
- APD and ADHD are not the same thing, but they very commonly go together.
Also also!! APD is incredibly common with other information processing disorders like SPD!
To add on, APD doesn't just affect processing sound and speech!
It can also affect your speech, reading, writing, etc.
