is fine line supposed to be listened to backwards?—my interpretation (a thread);
say fine line is in fact supposed to be listened to backwards—the first song is fine line, where he repeatedly sings “we’ll be alright,” almost as if he is reassuring himself that in the end, they’ll be alright, they’ll make it through this
then the song after fine line is tpwk &in it he’s basically singing about wanting to find a safe place where he feels like he’ll belong and be able to be himself without fear of judgement, so like if golden really is when he’s reached the state of feeling like he can be himself,
then tpwk is before he got there & him yearning to find this sort of safe haven, daydreaming almost about what it’ll be like once he does find it
canyon moon is talking about them being in a good place, feeling content without being in the public eye—“the world’s happy waiting,” they know that we’ll wait for them as long as they need us to
sunflower vol 6 is a continuation for this feeling of being content, not feeling pressured by society to come out but also not feeling trapped (obvs despite all the management interference)
during she, el is being pushed back into the narrative, causing l & h to get driven apart again & putting a tarnish on their relationship, talking about how h is basically jealous of how she gets to be in the public eye with l and not him
tbsl could be when a possible break up could have happened, talking about how his drunken words spoke lies and he’s sorry for lashing out the way he did “dont blame the drunk caller,” “im just an arrogant son of a bitch who cant admit when he’s sorry”
falling goes along with the thing about them being separated, h is still so madly in love with louis and blames himself & his drunken words for everything that has happened “there’s no one to blame but the drink and my wandering hands.” falling back into the place of frustration
and unsettlement and just sadness that he experienced during 1d days. he regrets all of his words. “forget what i said, its not what i meant, and i cant take it back”
cherry could have two meanings depending on your view: if you believe h*mille was fake & cherry is a stunt song, then it could be talking about the stunt, having been put in as a stunt song but still being there to show that he was having to stunt eve when they were driven apart
or if you believe they were in fact together, its about how he was with her during their time apart but still wanted louis and only louis
lights up is about h finding himself again, regathering his thoughts and getting himself back onto the path of self expression he’s been yearning for. he doesn’t want to hide anymore—“im never coming back down,” ALSO the “all the lights couldn’t put out the dark, running through
my heart” refers to when he was in a dark place (during tbsl, falling, & cherry), but then the next lyrics “lights up and they know who you are,” “step into the light,” & “im not ever going back” talking about how he is now in a place where he doesn’t care what others think,
he is going to be unapologetically himself whether anyone wants him to or not
adore you is h asking l to come back into his life, he’s asking to let h love him again and he’s sorry for what happened and he understands him l doesn’t want to come back to him but he needed to apologize for what was said and done—“you don’t have to say you love me, you don’t
have to say nothing, you don’t have to say youre mine.” despite all this, he doesn’t want to lose l and he’d do almost anything not to “id walk through fire for you, just let me adore you like its the only thing ill ever do.” he’s trying to show l that he’s sorry and he’ll do
anything to get him back and he’s going to make sure nothing happens again
watermelon sugar could be about falling back into love, feeling completely enveloped in this returning feeling of happiness after h struggled so much while being away from the one person who completes him in life
(or simply abt sex and pleasure, who knows) (kells @foolforhabitt also mentioned that it could be about the feeling of intimacy again, which fits still)
and then golden is like the finish line. they’re almost there. h knows l is scared, (“i know that youre scared because im so open”) but he wants him to be free and to be himself, no strings attached, because its what he deserves (“he’s golden and im hoping someday youre open”)
so yeah, there’s my interpretation. creds to ella ( @kiwiwallss) for the base line of all the songs (with the exception of fine line, tpwk, watermelon sugar, and cherry) & sasha ( @babyhoneyslou) for the backwards fine line album concept
also this was just me playing around with ideas, at the end of the day i don’t know any of the real meanings behind the songs & this was purely for entertainment purposes only <3
