The SM57 works fine for a vocal mic, but you may need a windscreen and almost certainly will need a pop filter if you& #39;re real close to it. I also find that I personally need de-essing on it for speech, but I don& #39;t really have that issue with the SM58.
That little cut around 5-6 KHz on the SM58 due to its grille is what makes the difference for me when it comes to whether or not de-essing is necessary
Funny enough, I usually do de-essing at exactly 4 KHz for when I use an SM7B. It tends to work best for that. I could take or leave de-essing on the SM7B, but it& #39;s even more pleasant when I do use it
Also while people may have a big temptation to buy the entire VIP package, I& #39;d recommend not doing that. It& #39;s very expensive and is really just used for flexing/keeping up an image. The mount alone is $250.
For those wondering what the "VIP package" is, it& #39;s the traditional package that was always on the podium for presidents until just recently. Dual SM57s with A2WS (or A81WS depending on the environment) windscreens and the VIP55SM mount.
