As of Saturday, our region in IL goes back to no indoor dining due to a continued high % COVID positivity rate, so we're back to carryout and outdoor dining only. I'm sure you've seen places that are refusing to close and are continuing to seat indoors against health code...
I won't make assumptions about other business owners. I don't know their bills, their financial situation, their staffs or anything else that might cause them to make that decision. I will say that we have been overwhelmed by the support we're getting from our fans. BUT....
I don't think the onus of supporting small businesses in this time of COVID closures should be put on the public. While it's amazing to see them go above and beyond to support us (like dining on our patio in 40º weather) it's not their responsibility to subsidize my business.
So, as heartwarming as it is to get that love back from our guests, friends, and neighbors, the responsibility really should fall on local and state gov't to support the businesses they are closing down/restricting. Uncle Sam should be the one obligated to show us love.
So the next time you see someone online saying "make sure to support local", please, by all means do that too, but then go write a letter to your mayor, senator or state rep. Tell them it's vital to pass Restaurant Relief under the HEROES Act.
It’s up to the Senate to take action. They’re scheduled to be in D.C. for another week before returning home for the rest of the month. which is why we need to do everything we can to urge the Senate to provide relief for America's 500,000 independent restaurants and bars.
