So I got deep on Reddit today after reading a thread of beef on r/Tulsa but what it led me to was even more crazy... do you know about the Tulsa Association of Pioneers Memorial Statue that stands in Owen Park?
You already know this is going nowhere good. Standing near the “oldest house in Tulsa” and the fire department in Owen Park is an obelisk shaped monument commemorating a picnic held in the Park on September 21st, 1921.
This “old-timers” barbecue was held by the Tulsa Association of Pioneers to “commemorate and perpetuate the memory of those ‘sturdy pioneers’ who by their sacrafice (sic) and effort helped to build a great empire” as inscribed on the statue.
There’s also another part of the monument that lists attendees / members of the association... these include (do you see where this is going yet) the family of W. T. Brady, and the Bynum family..... 😳🤔
This picnic (although it can be assumed very heinous) was not the least heinous thing happening in Tulsa on 9/21/21... a mere three months after the race massacre. Also happening in town on the same weekend (likely the reason for the picnic) was the statewide Confederate reunion.
I’m not going to regurgitate a bunch of Lee Roy Chapman articles I read as a freshman at BTW in this Twitter thread. I’m not going to regurgitate the entire Reddit post that informed me about the TAP statue in Owen Park in this Twitter thread.
But if you were keeping up with Watchmen this time last year. It’s real. The vast and heinous conspiracy of racism and white supremacy in Tulsa is real. The city was founded on it. On land stolen out from under Creek settlers.
Ever heard of Tuckabache? You have him to thank for Gathering Place. Not George Kaiser. This is beside the main point that the TAP statue in Owen Park should come down. Instead of staying on my soapbox, I’m going to reply to this thread with articles you should read.
https://theblackwallsttimes.com/2020/08/26/hope-won-last-night/ this article, although more about Greg Robinson, makes mention of the TAP statue, and also includes a picture of it as well as Brady and Bynum's names on the statue.
