— an educational thread about Islam and what it's about, contradicting popular stereotypes, and addressing misinformation.
first of all; islam is a RELIGION. please remember that.
anyone can be a muslim. not all muslims are arab or "brown".
religion is a CHOICE.
ethnicity is not a choice since you're born a certain ethnicity, race, etc.

islam is the second largest religion in the world with about 1.8 billion muslims worldwide. its roots go back further but scholars typically date the creation of islam to the 7th century. islam started in mecca, during the time of the Prophet Muhammad’s life.

women didn't have rights in the arab world before islam. women weren't seen as equal to men and were oppressed. when a woman had a baby and it turned out to be a girl, the babies were buried alive because they were considered a shame to the family. women were
forced into marriages they didn't want. they were treated like objects, didn't have any inheritance and men had basically every right. women were passed between men as if they were nothing but property. and it was always like this, until islam was introduced.
islam provided women with rights. islam stood up for women. islam taught women they were equal to men. that they mattered too. they have the right to get an education. they have a choice and can choose their life partner. islam gave women a VOICE.
toxic arab culture does still exist nowadays, and sadly way too many women are still being treated wrongfully. but that is only to be blamed on the individuals treating them that way. not islam as a whole. one person does not define every person.
ramadan.
christian calenders are based around the sun whereas islamic ones are based around the moon. islam has it's own months and ramadan is one of them. ramadan is the holiest month of each year. during this month, the holy Quran was revealed to our Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)

during ramadan, we fast from food, drinking, cursing, fighting nd anything that we, as a person or our morals, consider a sin. we start our fast at dawn and end our fast at dusk.

we fast to acknowledge some of the blessings given to us in our lives. blessings that we don't
usually pay attention to. by not eating or drinking, we acknowledge the blessing we have to be able to do so on a daily basis. we think of all the people living in poverty, people facing hunger and people who don't have access to such accommodations.
ramadan also teaches us patience and discipline. we should be calmer deal with things with a better mind than before, endure cravings and lean how to control ourselves and to make ourselves into better people.
during ramadan, we try to be the best muslims we could possibly be.

this can be from doing charity, prayers, reading the Quran, learning the Quran, understanding the Quran, helping friends and families, helping strangers, etc.
there's a reward for every good deed a muslim does, an unseen reward but it still exists. in ramandan, these rewards
there's a reward for every good deed a muslim does, an unseen reward but it still exists. in ramandan, these rewards
are doubled. this is why we believe that God (Allah) is incredibly kind and generous to us.
ramandan brings out a side of people you may never have seen before, and they may be a better person than they were before.

violence.
this is STRICTLY prohibited in islam. in arabic, islam stands for "peace" so saying islam condones violence is just wrong. our Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) never hit a living thing in his LIFE. not a man, not a woman, not a tree, not an animal, nothing. never even spoke to

muslims NEVER started wars for the purpose of spreading islam. spreading islam was important but it was NOT done like this. muslims went to war to put an end to oppression. and would only go to "war" with a tribe, territory or country after several encounters with their
leader(s). people were being mistreated. only people of higher ranking or wealth mattered and ordinary people had little to no rights. slavery, slave trade, and a lot of racism was also common back then.
after the leader would still not agree to treat everyone equally, they'd go to war to save those people from being wrongfully treated.
islam has its own rules and prohibitions about war.
it is prohibited to kill women, children, elders, animals, anyone who surrenders,

runs away, is hiding or praying in a temple, a monk, a priest or a sick person. it is prohibited to cut a tree, destroy a house, a temple, or a church. it is prohibited to disfigure the dead and to enforce islam on anyone EVER (not only prohibited during war).
you only get to kill those who were going to kill YOU or any of your people on the given battlefield. mass killing is prohibited during a war as you don't know whose lives you're taking. killing fellow muslims is prohibited. killing ANYONE for ANY reason is also prohibited.
hijab.
muslim women are to start wearing a hijab at some point in their life. most do it after puberty hits and they've gotten their periods. however, that's not mandatory and it honestly depends on the person, their families and their beliefs.

as per my beliefs; my parents never forced me to wear it. it was my own personal choice. i chose when i got to start wearing it. however that might not be everyone's belief and that's OKAY.
wearing a hijab also makes you have to cover your body and "shield" it from the public

eye, in a way.
wearing my hijab also means i cover my entire body. my arm sleeves are until my wrists and my pants reach my ankles. it's a way of being modest, as some see it.
burka and niqab are other forms of a hijab, however they are optional and totally up to the person

nobody can force a girl to wear a hijab.
if you wear a hijab, you can't show your hair or body to men that aren't directly related to you. however, they can show it to any other woman, whether they're a relative or a stranger.
when you start wearing a hijab, it's for LIFE.

facts / other things you should maybe know.
the Quran is a 14th century old book and is written in HEAVY arabic. not even adults can fully understand it. the arabic language used in our daily lives is very different compared to the one in the Quran.

there are many incorrect Quran translations online. it is definitely better to ask your Muslim friends about any questions you have about islam, rather than searching for an answer online.
hadith.
a hadith is something that our Prophet said or did in his time. to us, His words and actions were really important and we hope to follow them as best as we could.
it's like holy words and actions to us and is something very important in our religion.
