For Filipino-American History Month, I'd like to highlight some awesome Filipinx scientists working in fundamental physics and adjacent fields.

Reginald's adviser, Prof. Ian Vega, is the head of the @Gravity_NIP_UPD group at @UPDiliman1908. Here's a photo with Ian (center) from the @samahangpisika conference in 2019.

Ian has single-handedly created a hub for international-level gravity research. He's now graduating his second cohort of undergrad/MSc students who easily meet the bar of some of the best incoming students at @UCRiverside. Colleagues, keep an eye out for these applicants.
The gravity group at @nip_upd has a brand new astronomical data and computation group headed by the inimitable @reina_reyes!
Marvin Flores is a professor at @nip_upd trained in quantum information who is doing a sabbatical as a postdoc at @WitsUniversity with @ATLASexperiment. Upon his return, he will lead the Philippines' efforts in experimental particle physics.

Marvin's paper on Stealth SUSY may have been the first hep-ex LHC paper by a Filipino Ph.D

However, I think the first hep-ex LHC paper by a Filipino national may belong to @gabrielgallardo (arXiv:1804.03602), a D.Phil student at @OxfordPhysics working with @ATLASexperiment.

To the best of my knowledge, the second Filipino [high-energy] physics professor based in the US is Mikhail Solon, who recently began as faculty at @UCLA.

Photo (from SoCal BSM 2018): current Filipino physics professors in the US. (Are there others?)

By the way, Mikhail work on effective field theories are both broad and deeply insightful. I remember many years ago having lunch with Miks when he was a visiting prospective grad student; he ended up going to @UChicago... sorry @CornellPhysics. :-)

PhD student @TramAcuna at @Sissaschool is a rising dark matter particle theorist (!!). Here's Tram's first paper, which I think may be the first dark matter theory paper by a Filipino national.

Sagada Penano is an undergraduate Physics major at @Stanford who I met at the 2020 @PASUfficial graduation celebration. Since then, she remotely joined my group to work on dark matter capture in neutron stars. Her recent work is on machine learning techniques in @LIGO.
I recently found out that Sagada is the daughter of Dr. Joe Penano, head of the Beam Physics Branch and Radiation and Acceleration Physics Section of the @NavyResearchLab.
I'd also like to shout out Jane Garcia, a 2nd year physics grad student at @ucmerced. She's not a particle physicist, but she was one of the students who hosted me at @nip_upd and I welcome her to the @UofCalifornia. https://twitter.com/upphysics/status/1296764348585533445
Hillary Andales ( @cosmichillarays) is starting her sophomore year at @MIT focusing on astrophysics. Keep an eye on this rising star---she's been on a stellar trajectory since winning the @brkthroughprize Junior Challenge in 2017.

I've been deeply moved by the way that the Philippines has voiced its support for Hillary from across the world.

*This* is how we build a more inclusive, global scientific community. I applaud this culture envisions its aspiring young scientists as role models and ambassadors.
In my own past, I think the very first Filipino physicist that I met was Jonathan Hsu, a string theory PhD who was a TA of mine when I was an undergrad.

Prof. Jose Magpantay may have been the first even Filipino particle physics theorist.

A recent development for science education in the Philippines: thanks to a philanthropic sponsorship, the digital textbook company has made its entire library of courses free of charge to any user with an http://edu.ph  email.

I've recently discovered the Association of Filipino Scientists in America, @AFSAOfficial, which (among other things) hosts a delightful kumusta conversation every Wednesday.
