Seeing so many programmes launch in Scotland Including @NTSonline & yet again there’s no representation of South Asian or East Asian stories. Our histories aren’t heard & it’s rare now to see stories by/with South Asian or East Asian artists. #WeExist #POCUnity ✨
And this isn’t me saying “look at us always”, it’s what I’ve said in so many groups over lockdown, we need balance. We can’t speak of one groups history and not another. We don’t teach about the Silk Routes or The British Raj. Our education is backwards.
Since graduating from @RCStweets last year I’ve spoken about racial diversity, it’s something I’m truly passionate about, if you know me you’d know. And every time I speak of it, I’m told “well write your own stuff” and I do that but the climb is doubly hard then to be seen.
All I wish is that we see that racial diversity isn’t a tick box. That racism and oppression Hits different groups in different ways. Like a director said to me “We as POC all face different oppressions but we get shoved under one umbrella, what we need is more unity “
I’m passionate for white gatekeepers and people who run theatres to see that Britain is different to America. We have many groups such as the East Asian and South Asian communities who feel unheard or unseen in theatres from zoom groups over lockdown.
But now is the time to stand up & change this. We exist too, our histories are different but we’re here also because of British Atrocities in the past. Educate through the arts, it’s a powerful tool. Don’t leave us behind & I hope future generations don’t battle the same as us ❤️
To round off you might be thinking why this thread,& it’s only because I’m seeing Covid change the arts & I want us to show a true history of Britain. No hierarchy in racial diversity, but a space where we all have our voices heard through are. #RepresentationMatters #WeExist ❤️
And also this thread isn’t me being against one group or another. It’s about me wishing to see unity between all POC like the 80s. Let’s show future generations that this one stands together. We can make change & let’s show gatekeepers we are united ❤️✨ #POCVoicesEmpowered 🙌🏾
Also we need to change the education system too. If we show a true education of history then people will understand how Asian and black people are in the UK! We will see Britain isn’t innocent. Don’t erase our history, because you don’t think it’s pretty x
But yea, I feel change is coming and I’m thankful to all the black, south Asian, East Asian , Ethnic Minority artists and creatives I’ve met through lockdown & BLM, who’ve educated me and shared knowledge. Change is coming. But it never happens over night xx
