I’ve been seeing tweets on UWI/ other Uni& #39;s mercilessness & difficulty “during a PANDEMIC” specifically how their mental health has been affected & that the semester should have been cancelled.

However, I think there are a few things that people need to understand - A THREAD https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="🧵" title="Thread" aria-label="Emoji: Thread">
1. In modern days getting a uni education has become normalized/celebrated and promoted by our systems since it advances a capitalist agenda. But historically University was reserved for scholars who would dedicate their life to research and studies. Streamlining everyone into +
few areas will (and has) disproportionately affected our industries. We should start accepting that tertiary level education is not for everyone.
2. Go easy on yourself

Several times a day you will see, hear or think something along the lines of ‘during a [redacted] pandemic!?’
The circumstances are in fact less than ideal. There is a rise in thoughts of hopelessness (inter alia) amongst uni students
There is no reason for you to be operating as if everything is normal, but you must also understand that you have a responsibility to make sure that YOU are okay
3. Lessen your load

I am very familiar with feeling like a failure for not completing my degree within the intended time frame. Half way through last semester I had to drop one of my courses because my mental health was affected by the state of the world
Pleading with my lecturers for extensions, and focusing on my other courses made a significant difference. No one is judging you for dropping a course or dropping the semester. And if they are then
4. Universities are run by people too

In the same way that u are stressed out about the future, they are too. They may also have families to feed and loved ones depending on them. It’s less than ideal to be responsible for the next generation’s future *insert* during a PANDEMIC
They don’t have it all figured out either and nothing comes from randomly speaking ill of them
Don’t get me wrong, I wholeheartedly believe in being vocal about your experience and channeling your voice to those in power. I also believe that championing discussions on the relationship between mental health, university students and the pandemic is useful +
... even if it& #39;s just to find support from peers. I just hope that we do not become destructive towards ourselves or others during this difficult period
