MY TOP 10 THE WEEKND SONGS, DECONSTRUCTED

(a thread)
Honorable mentions that missed the cut: I Was Never There, The Birds Pt. 1, D.D., Alone Again, Twenty Eight, Kiss Land, Reminder.

All choices based on preference, and my personal opinion.

If you enjoyed lmk, and show some love. RTs for exposure are appreciated.
10. LOFT MUSIC

(1/2) Loft Music is a good example of The Weeknd’s early work - complex instrumentals paired w/ bleak lyrics mostly about women and drugs, followed by long, airy outros comprised of few lyrics, yet still satiated with vocal layers. The distorted and warped ...
(2/2) ... guitar that carries throughout the song gives this track life and further adds to the drug induced euphoria The Weeknd is singing about.
9. TELL YOUR FRIENDS

(1/2) The Weeknd does his thing on Tell Your Friends, and so does Kanye on the production. This laid back cut from his commercial breakout album does a good job of showing any new fans what The Weeknd is all about, and feels like a victory lap for the ...
(2/2) ... Toronto-born star. The bridge and ensuing guitar solo towards the end of the song is also one of the highlights of the album in my opinion.
8. THE PARTY & THE AFTER PARTY

(1/2) The Party & The After Party is (simply put) so smooth. Compared to other cuts off his first three mixtapes, this definitely has a more upbeat vibe, and is aptly named. The themes are still consistent as the other songs, but this track ...
(2/2) ... definitely feels like a party. At the midway point the mood shifts to “The After Party”, and the song transitions into a long outro, with a more intimate feeling.
7. PROFESSIONAL

(1/2) Kiss Land is often overlooked, but has some of The Weeknd’s best work. The album centers mostly around touring and traveling to distant places for the first time, like Japan. Professional sets the stage perfectly, opening with a gong sounding, and ...
(2/2) ... carrying a dark instrumental accompanied by equally grim lyrics. The line “So you’re somebody now, But what’s a somebody in a nobody town...” is one of my favorite lyrics by The Weeknd, and resonates perfectly as the music builds.
6. KING OF THE FALL

(1/2) KOTF has been one my favorite for a long time. Abel spits some of his coldest bars OAT for basically 5 minutes straight, and it results in lyrically one of his best songs. It’s been exclusive to SoundCloud and been on and off streaming platforms ...
(2/2) ... for a while, uploaded to Spotify by unverified third party accounts like “XO”. However, recently The Weeknd himself finally put it up on streaming platforms for good.
5. FAITH

(1/2) Right from it’s released, I’ve loved Faith. The lyrics are direct and chilling, and seem to foreshadow what Abel believes to be his ultimate demise. If I were to describe this song I would say its like you’re spiraling out of control, as if you’re recklessly ...
(2/2) ... flying down the highway at 100mph. At around the midway point, reality suddenly hits, when you finally crash, coming to a screeching halt.
4. SIDEWALKS

(1/2) I might be alone on this one, but Sidewalks is by far my favorite off Starboy. This makes the list because of the guitar based production, the story, and the Kendrick verse. The lyrics tell The Weeknd’s tale of coming up from rags to riches on some Scarface ..
(2/2) ... shit, going from “homeless to Forbes list.” This track has huge energy, and is the kind of song I’d love to see live some dayđŸ€ž
3. AFTER HOURS

The title track from his most recent album is a sprawling epic, setting the landscape for the album and laying out the main premises. The 6 minute song somehow never loses the audience’s attention, remaining completely captivating throughout it’s entirety.
2. HOUSE OF BALLOONS / GLASS TABLE GIRLS

(1/2) HOB/GTG lyrically showcases everything The Weeknd is about. Both halves are great by themselves, but when together, they compliment each other perfectly. This song also gives a party/after party vibe, but this time ...
(2/2) ... the first half is uptempo and hard hitting, and the second half is dark and unsettling. Sometimes when songs have beat switches it can seem sloppy and incongruent, but not in this case. I love this song, and this would’ve been my #1 if it wasn’t for...
1. THE MORNING

(1/2) This is the pinnacle of The Weeknd’s artistry. The production is amazing, the vocals float flawlessly over the instrumentation, and the buildup/drop into the chorus is so fucking climactic. Additionally, the influence of this song should not be ...
(2/2) ... understated - R&B was changed forever when The Weeknd dropped, & this song is a great example of how the landscape of the genre was impacted by his trilogy of mixtapes. I don’t think another Weeknd song will ever be able to top this. The Morning is a 10/10, perfect song
