why you should stop writing mafia aus: a thread
first of all, here's the definition of the word "mafia". it is often used as an umbrella term for "criminal organization" but the word is directly related to the italian mafia. it was born in sicily in the 19th century, but it now operates everywhere in italy.
the mafia has been romanticized in movies for ages, and it is still used as a way to stereotype italian and italian-american people in cinema and comedy.
most people know the mafia as a generic criminal organization with hot men, but it is actually still a big issue in italy. the two most dangerous organizations are the mafia and the camorra.
most (if not all) towns in italy were affected by them. the mafia extorts money, ruins people's lives, murders and tortures people, blows up shops, bridges and houses and even has agreements with the government.
here are some of the things the mafia has done:
if you ask any italian person you know they'll probably have a story to tell about the mafia. for example, a criminal organization in my dad's town shot a little girl in the head, and another one kidnapped the people who shot her, brought them to a small forest, -
- tortured them, murdered them and threw them in some old etruscan wells
a lot of people dismiss us italians when we ask you to stop romanticizing the mafia because "italian people aren't oppressed", i hope you know that the mafia exploits african migrants in tomato farms and it's literally the +
+ equivalent of modern day slavery.
comparing your faves to these people is disgusting, and i can assure you it makes italian people (and people from other countries who have to deal with dangerous criminal organization) really uncomfortable.
luckily, mafia aus don't involve a realistic depiction of the mafia, so if you really just want to use criminal organizations as an aesthetic, at least stop using the word "mafia". an alternative to that could be "crime!au".

a lot of people are completely misunderstanding this thread. this was just to shed light on the mafia. i am aware that criminal organizations exist anywhere but i'm specifically talking about the romanticization of the italian one
