Console Wars, their Stupidity, and the Future of Exclusive Games: A Thread
I’d like to preface this tweet with a few things. 1. me and @TimeBombTomYT already had a brief conversation about this earlier but i feel like everything i wanted to say wasn’t able to be said and 2. all of the things said here are without bias. this is coming from (1)
someone who owns every console from the PS4 generation even tho i was raised on Xbox. I also own a PC. i legitimately couldn’t give less of a shit which console is objectively the best. that being said, i really want to have a conversation about console exclusives (2)
and their relevance in the future of gaming. the too long; didn’t give a shit about this tweet is while it drives competition and sales numbers in the different consoles, i think console exclusive games are a thing in the past that ultimately lead to either shady business, (3)
the premature death of certain games, and less gaming experiences (with one acception)
first thing i’d like to say is that i started with an Xbox One this generation so most of my multi-plat games are from that generation. that being said, i originally bought a PS4(4)
to play spider-man bc i’m a huge comic boom fan (especially spider-man, go figure) and this is where the dilemma begins. either we keep console exclusives so that people will buy other consoles just to play their exclusive games, or we get rid of them to drive (5)
higher game sales in general and give everyone an opportunity to play any game. for example, anyone who works at Playstation would want us to keep console exclusives just based on the fact that many people out there bought a PS4 just to play a few exclusive games even tho (6)
they already owned a different console. while that helps drive sales for playstation’s, in my opinion it ultimately screws over gamers who made the “wrong” choice at launch and can’t afford to buy a new console but still want to play amazing games. another example i’d like (7)
use is The Last of Us. we’re talking about a 10/10 game, critically acclaimed for its story, and characters, and i have never played it. bc i never owned a PS3. and recently, i even got it spoiled for me on accident. while it was a game i really wanted to play, (8)
i, and countless others, who wanted to play it ultimately never got the chance to play it and probably won’t for a very long time because it was exclusive to the playstation. while i understand exclusives are seen by many as a necessity to *want* a new console, i disagree. (9)
gaming shouldn’t just be “oh, you have a playstation. imagine not playing Halo” or “oh you have an xbox. imagine not playing god of war” bc that person might very well really want to play that game. i know tons of people who only own playstation’s who really wanna play (10)
Halo. but they can’t, bc they either can’t afford or don’t want to buy a Xbox. i know a ton of people who want to play a ton of PS4 and PS5 exclusives but can’t bc they can’t afford those consoles. gaming shouldn’t be about exclusive games. it should be about *gaming.* (11)
it should be about having amazing experiences with any game you want regardless which platform you choose. i should be able recommend a game to someone without having to know which console they play and whether or not they’ll be able to play it. gamers shouldn’t have to (12)
choose which console they want just bc of the games on the platform. they should be able to choose based on which console they actually *want more*. we all shouldn’t have experiences limited just bc we couldn’t afford every single console in a generation. (13)
i genuinely believe that console exclusive games are a thing in the past. they’re a thing that were invented back in 1990 to drive competition between Nintendo and Sega but now drive arguments against gamers who should be able to talk about thier favorite games with each (14)
other. and this is all coming from someone who’s gonna get a PS5 this year bc of the exclusives. i’m submitting to it. but i shoudnt have to. nobody else should have to. i think as gaming evolves we really need to begin to think of what we want future console (15)
generations to do, versus what we’ve been conditioned to do bc of past consoles. it’s time for gaming to move past exclusives and forward towards better things. (16)
