A diverse cast doesn’t automatically equal good representation. The very presence of characters of color and queer characters doesn’t automatically make a work good. There’s nuance to these things.
It’s also possible for a work to be really, really good at engaging with queerness but absolute shit with portraying characters of color, or disabled characters, or, or, or. Works aren’t usually “completely problematic” or “not at all problematic”. It’s usually v complex
Things get dicey when people try to speak on representation that doesn’t include them. For example, white queers will often shout about how good a work is because they SEE QPOC characters, but can’t tell that the way the work treats queerness is not the same way it treats race
A cast LOOKING diverse doesn’t automatically mean the story won’t prioritize characters differently. It also doesn’t mean the cast isn’t a ploy for diversity points. It also doesn’t automatically mean that there was any diversity—especially racial diversity—in the writers’ room
A lot of indie creators actually *are* QPOC, disabled, and otherwise marginalized creators just trying to make their own art (support them!) but this isn’t always the case, especially with bigger productions. We say diversity isn’t a trend—but not everyone agrees
