I’m reminded that it’s review code season. Some brief advice to streamers and Youtube creators new to this:
- Start emailing and submitting requests now, there are thousands of requests often handled by 1 person
- Be kind and professional! There is no benefit to being rude

- Have a list of games ready for now all the way up to games launching in April.
- The season doesn’t stop at Christmas and after New Years things just get faster when planning. Have your thoughts and plans prepared. Do research on launch windows and dates. Get ahead

- Be clear and detailed about your plans for the game.
- Know there is an edge to having unique ideas other than just playing and reviewing
- You can do more than just get a review code, cosplay presenting artwork, dev notes and stories are forms of coverage too. Build trust

- Be sure you’re contacting the right person. Not every single dev and PR manager is in charge of key distribution. It’s insanely rude and invasive to contact them on personal channels. Do your research and if you don’t hear back, ping again. It’s a busy time so try to understand
- Be upfront with your source and your community on when you can get your coverage out. It’s so busy for you this time of year and without a team - you just can’t get to it all.
- Communication on when you’ll be playing and showing the games you chose is a big help for so many

- Share the link to the content you made back to the person who gave you the code. This builds relationships
- Even if your coverage wasn’t favorable doesn’t mean there’s no value in it. Everyone looks at where they can improve, players will still find interest.

- If you don’t get a code DO NOT TAKE IT PERSONALLY. You may not fit the criteria, you may have been missed, or there may be other reasons. However don’t assume it’s a personal campaign against you
- Have a backup plan. There are literally over 200 games launching now to April

- Do not break embargo. Don’t try to let a friend don’t it, and don’t try and break embargo or leak content through your secret account. You are hurting so many people with these actions and we’re poorer for it. Read and understand your embargo terms or don’t accept access/codes
- You don’t necessarily have to have content up before or on day 1. Many players are grateful for “state of the game updates” a month or so after release. Taking time to go in depth with information that other reviewer’s didn’t cover is a great way to differentiate yourself
A thank you to your source goes a long way. There are people in my life who wowed me with their early professionalism and content who are now sitting with the best creators and streamers out there. I assure you the consistent and kind got codes. I’m proud of so many of them
