MOLLY GRAY IS CIA: A THREAD #vtpoli
What we mean when we say Molly Gray is ‘CIA’ is not that she is a Bond type secret agent, but rather that she is connected to global neoliberalism, an ideology that has devastated workers in Vermont and around the world, directly counter to what we think of as ‘VT politics’.
Gray is a Madeleine Kunin protege. Kunin is a centrist DNC politico through and through. Kunin is also the godmother of the anti-Bernie clique of ‘liberal’ VT. She routinely puts out op-eds about how Bernard is a mean old misogynist (a tactic Molly has clearly picked up).
Kunin served multiple roles in Bill Clinton’s campaign and administration, including ambassador to Switz. where Gray would later be stationed. The connection is both personal and political; Kunin’s grandson is deputy director of Gray’s campaign, after working for Mayor Pete.
Molly’s career in the national security apparatus started with a job at the Itnl Committee of the Red Cross in DC, where she was a chauffeur of sorts, giving politicians tours of US detention centers worldwide.
Molly’s role was intended “to help drive their understanding of the sometimes brutal conditions detainees face, and consequently affect the U.S. foreign policy decisions.” This tangential relationship to imperialist brutality is a pattern that repeats in Molly’s career.
Molly then attended the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, a bastion of international neoliberalism on par w/ the Harvard Kennedy School (and the only partner institution to co-deliver double degrees), and a major ideological center of the Cold War.
At Vermont Law, Molly co chaired this ( https://ilg2.org/tag/cyber-war/ ) conference with a member of the Federalist Society (HAH!) where attendees giggled about ‘legally justified assassination’. See for yourself:
After attending VT Law, Molly was “recruited” to help launch the International Code of Conduct Association. The ICOCA is ostensibly meant to be a protocol to curb human rights abuses among mercenaries commonly known as Private Security Contractors (PSC). Think Blackwater/Academi.
In reality these codes are written in close conjunction with PSC’s to legitimize existing practices as ‘legal’ without actually committing less atrocities. Read more here:

In a paper on the role of ICoCA in Latin America, Molly is quoted speaking about PSC’s, who have routinely violated human rights when employed by large agro and mineral firms: https://www.ohchr.org/Documents/Issues/Mercenaries/WG/PrivateMilitarySecurity/K_Valencia_2.pdf
“...the ICoCA does not take a position on the legitimacy or moral value of PSCs but rather recognizes industry growth and the services provided by PSCs in a variety of complex environments globally, including Latin America.”
Molly has characterized her work overseas as protecting human rights, but organization she worked for sees human rights as secondary to the growth of the PSC industry. It is distilled neoliberalism, attempting to strike a balance between human rights and market demands.
Highlights from Molly’s donors tell the story as well as anything:
Christos Tsentas, Attorney Advisor at USAID (literally a CIA front)
Jamie Hayes, U.S. Army Chair at National War College
Thomas Vallely, Sr. Advisor for SE Asian Affairs at Kennedy School at Harvard
Elisha Nyman, Foreign Service Officer, Dept. of State
Chan Park, Director of Congressional Affairs at Microsoft
Tim Reiser, Sr Director of Security & Compliance, Marriott International
Andrew MacPherson, Healthcare lobbyist
Catlin O’Neill Director of U.S. Public Policy, Facebook
Despite being an essentially apolitical apparatchik (correctly identifying voting as only tangential to power btw), she is now leveraging networks to make a run for office, consistent with someone whose goals are leverage and networks building, rather than policy or organizing.
Molly isn’t just bad for Vermont, she’s bad for the country. She does not support basic progressive policy at home, and abroad her work was not humanitarian service, but rather the whitewashing of imperialist wars and human rights violations.
So why is the DNC interested in boosting an insider to such an obscure office as VT Lt. Governor? Is the national party turning its attention to VT tradition of radical politics, and aiding the VT Dems in removing the Prog thorn from their side? Stay Tuned!
For the record: Scott Milne is a bloodless libertarian oligarch freak. I recommend that you do not vote for lieutenant governor, its a meaningless office that should be abolished anyway.
