On Sept 14, 4 upper-caste men allegedly assaulted & raped a 19-year-old Dalit woman in Boolgarhi village of UP’s #Hathras district--200 km from the national capital & 50 km from Agra. The victim died 15 days later. IndiaSpend’s @sadhika_tiwari visited Hathras. Follow this thread:
Boolgarhi is an upper-caste dominated village in #Hathras district: Of the nearly 250 families, only four are Valmikis--a scheduled caste community that the victim belonged to, villagers say
Most land in the village is owned by upper-caste men, while Dalit women from nearby villages take up most work such as sowing, harvesting and threshing, on daily wages
A walk through the village shows the distinction between well-constructed upper-caste houses, often with a car inside the tall metal gates, and the Dalit houses--on different sides of the village
The exception to this is the house of the four Thakur men accused in the case, whose house is about 100 steps from the victim’s house
The victim lived with her five siblings, a sister-in-law and her parents in the house that has two rooms, a kitchen, a courtyard, a cow-shed and a terrace
Scheduled Castes comprise 25% of the population in #Hathras, which has 871 women per 1,000 men, below the national average of 940: https://censusindia.gov.in/2011census/dchb/DCHB_A/09/0913_PART_A_DCHB_MAHAMAYA%20NAGAR.pdf
In 1997, #Hathras was carved out of Aligarh & named Mahamaya Nagar by Mayawati, 4-time chief minister of UP. Several statues of B.R. Ambedkar & schools, parks & gates bearing his name can be seen across the district. Its name was changed back to the original, Hathras, in 2006
The caste divide in the village is evident. “We don’t let our daughters roam around alone,” says a Dalit woman. “Our village has always been safe, this is the first time that something like this has happened,” says a Thakur woman
Barley is the prominent crop in the area. The village is surrounded by tall and dense barley fields. It is in these fields, 5 minutes' walk from her house, that the victim was allegedly raped around 9 a.m., while she was working there with her mother
The victim was treated in hospital for 14 days. Her body was brought to the village in the dead of the night on September 29 and cremated by the police in the middle of these barley fields, without the presence of her family members
